This is the brand new model just out by Ernie. My very good friend Harry was the one behind the idea for this folder and presented it to Ernie (after rehearsing first by using me as a sounding board I'm proud to say) back before the shot show this year. Shortly thereafter Ernie had the prototype made and presented one to Harry as a gift for the idea.

The blade is short but the handle is full size. The idea is a 50 state legal travel knife and one short enough for most major city dwellers to be legal also.

I love it. In fact it just came this afternoon but being all caught up and not being one to leave things alone for long I started playing in the shop. I can go back and forth from the .150 frame lock set up shown here to the factory .050 liner lock set up in minutes if I want to. I didn't have to modify the blade or the non lock side at all to pull this off.

I bought it to use and rather like the heft it has now compared to before and I like and trust frame locks more than liner locks anyway which was part of the reason for this experiment. The other reason was that several guys have asked me if I could do this mod for them on other Emerson models so I thought trying one out on my own knife was the best way to find out what I'd be up against. Turns out it wasn't all that bad really except for all the tough a$$ grinding it took with ti this thick. What a bear that was. Turned out very nice though.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice. Once again a great job. I like that it can be brought back to stock very easily, also.

Sure did. The knife arrived from Emerson Inc via UPS at noon on the 31st of Oct and it was a frame lock conversion about 10 hours later actually. I guess it was close to 4 am or so by the time I posted the completed pics but that was because I usually carry them and get them in different lighting to see what I missed, or if any other tweaking needs done. I'll probably have 15 hours in it just labor alone by the time I get it all spit shined.

Yesterday was one of those rare days anymore where I didn't get a thing in the mail in the way of a new project. I am usually pretty anal about staying caught up and have made a habit of knocking stuff out as it arrives to me. I've had few days like that where nothing came in the mail over the last year. Some days I get mulitples in the mail all at once so when nothing came I had to take advantage of that quick. Its rare I get to do something for myself that I want to do for all the stuff I'm doing for someone else that I have to do so this one was one of the rare ones for me for a change.

Great job(as usual) that knife does't look bad at all! I thought that with the small blade and large handle the proportions would be off, but looks good, with the Ti back, it looks GREAT!

Steve,
That's an incredible improvement to a good knife. I'm glad you're doing stuff like that on the emersons- that mod would make the cqc8 near about perfect to me.

Thanks guys.

Bob. I've got a CQC8 coming that is on order. Not sure when. This guy is not that fast but seems pretty reliable. I forsee an 8 done this way posted here and on my homepage in the future too.

Stay tuned. :D

Hi STR,
I haven't posted here before so it's nice to meet you all. This looks like a good improvement to the cqc14. I have A cqc12 that I just bought. It's a great knife in the hand but it is in desperate need of an over-travel stop on this lockbar. Something like the Hinderer device. The first time that I used this knife and felt how flexible the lockbar is I thought that it would end up in the safe. But you might be just the man for this project. Let me know if you're interested.

I'm enormously impressed with your modification. Not only does the knife perform better, but aesthetically it looks better. Have you shown this improvement to Ernest Emerson? You are truly talented.

Holy Smokes! I just perused your website. Unreal! You are one hell of a craftsman.

Thanks. You can see more of my picture gallery collections in my homepage links by clicking my screen name and then finding 'homepage'. there are two galleries of pics there. One is the link that you open to get there, the other is the STRprojects album. Some of the pictures in there are very old and go back many many years though.

Pretty soon, a lot of companies will be subscribing to the Spyderco mentality. ;)

Good lookin' knife.
