I need some opions on this matter. I am intrested in getting one but not sure which one to get. I know the Bm cqc7 is harder to get now but I simply want to know which is the best one period. A bit of a tough question but any help anyone can provide is appreciated.

I have owned 4 different versions of this knife. The ones I have had were almost identical with the exception of the pivot screw. The one you get should really depend on your needs. Consider the following:

For use:

I would go with the Emerson version for the following reasons:

1) It is readily available
2) It is reasonably priced
3) Can be repaired or replaced easily

For Collecting

I would go with any of the Benchmade version (either 3.25 or 4" blade):

1) Out of production which improves collectability
2) Tendency to increase in value over time compared to production piece Emerson.
3) More desired by collectors with a good resale market
4) Various versions available with other stamps like "HK" which are also very collectable.

Just my $.02 ....

I've had custom, BM, and Emerson production (carried in Iraq).

1. Custom is nice but very expensive should you lose it.

2. BM is okay. My current BM cost me $5.00 (garage sale) and was trashed when I got it. Rebuilt by Woody Woodcock (Oregon knifemaker) and is once again usable and very, very squared away.

3. Emerson production, satin finish, partial serration, went to Iraq and back. Daily use, little care, great QC, wonderful CQB knife in a pinch. Also, wrote it into current Rogue Warrior novel "Violence of Action" because it is just a great, great carry piece.

Answer - Buy the Emerson Production. No shortcuts, great service and support, battle proven.

If you want the Emerson, I think that they are discontinuing the CQC-7A models but keeping the CQC-7b's.

I'll jump in for Benchmade here, I have a carried BM CQC7 since they came out and it has been the best built stongest BM I ever owned and it has seen some hard times, I use it as my work knife and it's been used as a prybar, door opener an many more crazy things, The fit and finish of the BM's has always been great better than most of Emerson's production knives I have seen. But finding one of the BM's will be a bit harder than finding a Emerson, but if you can I think you will have a better knife with BM.

Emerson puts out some designs that I have come to call my favourite.

However, and this is just my experience, the QC on 3 of mine have been less than adequate.

In the case of my CQC7B it was warrantied twice and still there is a lot of blade play on it, both horizontal and vertical. All were NIB from the store.

My '99 and '00 were sent back. And my current '00 will probably need to go back to.

So all in all I think its a fantastic knife but in the QC department I've not had the greatest luck

Yikes, I just ordered a CQC7BW-BTS! I was told I might have to wait a couple months to get it due to goverment orders. I got my fingers crossed on this one.

FWIW

as far as EKI QC, i have bought about 7 the last 2 yrs (SOCFK,CQC8,I&I tanto,P-Tac,spec war, commander and CQC7) and the only one w/any probs, was, well the CQC7, poor lock up - BUT a trip to EKI solved that and its fine now also. i just might be lucky, but have not had any probs w/ EKI's, the prob w/the '7 was minor, if i wasnt so picky i wouldnt have even bothered w/it. imho EKI is one of the better makers, at LEAST on par w/BM, and BM is imho pretty damned good.

also have a BM 975S-bt and its been a winner also, bought it used for $60 (barely used) and have worked it pretty hard and its held up fine, but cant say its better than the EKI. i would say probably equal though. i do like a lot of the EKI designs better than the BM, i really wouldnt get a CQC7 would rather have a SOCFK, but i think right now they are kinda hard to get.

really ya cant lose, either is fine, buy the one that "grabs" ya

i just received my bm cqc 7 and it's sharp as hell. i like it and it's an edc for me. the only differences seem to be the tip up carry option for the emerson. the emerson may be easier to get serviced because it's till being made; the bm isn't. when it comes to being sharp, well the bm is not going to take a back seat. mine is sharp as hell. i had an emerson and traded it. i do miss it. my model has the 4 in blade which doesn't exist in the emerson model. you can't go wrong with either one. just like my bm better though.

if war is hell, take a better pitchfork than the devil
