Emerson Custom, any thoughts?

I'm a fan of Emerson knife, I think they look nice especially their satin finish blade. Some people may think they are expensive for 154CM blade and so-so f&f but for me it not an issue at all.

I just don't understand why their custom model are so expensive. Similar blade steel as production with just titanium bolsters and micarta scale for >1000$?
Hinderer XM's at secondary market price just sounds reasonable compared to them.

Please someone explain me why the price of Emerson custom are so absurd. I know nothings overprice if there are still can be sale but it really doesn't make sense in this case.

Supply, demand, exclusivity and prestige all come into play. If I could afford a custom CQC6 I would have one.

Hinderers are production knives. Emerson customs are only made by Emerson and he doesn't make a lot of them. If you buy from him directly they are like $600 or less.

The demand vastly exceeds the limited supply of new output. It's called market pricing :)

If you managed to score an Emerson custom at their lottery (where you win the right to buy a knife at "list" price) - you can flip it within 1 minute for 2x or 3x the money you paid. That's called market demand!!

Fortunately for my wallet, the Emerson custom bug has not bitten me. I like the production models and that keeps me happy enough, with some pimping mods in the mix.

I disagree. An XM-18 is under $400, but the only place to get them sells them for $700+. the same goes for Emerson customs. The secondary market is what makes the prices so high. What in the world would prestige have to do in this matter?

You are paying for the name and thats all.

The secondary market is what kills both of these knives. From what I understand they both have a comparable price if bought at knife show lotteries. I am not positive, but, I believe that Emerson customs are true custom handmade , hand ground blades and many if not all are actually made by Ernest Emerson himself, again not fact, but, that is the impression that I get. Does Rick Hinderer make the knives or are they mid techs, just wondering?

- Ernest makes the customs.

Only thing I would love to see from Emerson is a blade for lefties like me. Being left handed makes Emersons down right awkward to use.

Wait... the grind on Emerson knives actually FAVORS lefties...

And as for the pricing on Emerson customs... Ernie makes them himself. It's the difference between Strider Customs and productions, or Hinderer Customs and productions...
