What is the difference between the year models of the Emerson Commander?

I hear most people wanting a 98 and paying a premium for them?

What makes these so valuable?

What is the difference between the 98 and 99?

Why don't the newer models get the respect of the older ones?

WHEW... thats enough questions....

Thanks for the information.

I don't know from first hand experience, but I've heard that the 98's had thicker liners. I believe that on Emersons web site in regards to the Super Commander, it say's that it has liners as thick as the 98's. Don't quote me on that but I think that is where I read that.;)

The newer commanders also have a few different design changes. I believe they are screw placement, spacer stuff, and the grind is different as well. There is no swedge on the newer ones.

'98 Commanders have .0625" ti liners and thick g-10 handles, a swedge, and single ball detents. Newer models have .050" liners, thinner g-10 and double detents, which tend to make opening them very slightly less smooth. The 2002 Commander has some nice features like indexing grooves and a larger stop pin. The "5 year" Commander has the thicker pieces along with the new, nicer features. Interestingly, NONE of the models has EVER experienced a failure of the liner to withstand lateral pressure, so the thicknesses are really an esthetic thing, not a functional issue. As the first year of production, the '98s have a modest collectibility the others do not yet enjoy.
