I am getting ready to buy my first emerson. The CQC-15 BT. My question is how hard is the sharpening to learn?

on my emersons i normally use a steel rod or high grit (1500-2500) sandpaper. the spyderco sharpmaker stones work well, but the angle on the base is incorrect, so it takes some practice using a freehand technique.

its not too hard to learn how to sharpen them, i dont like to use a SM myself, just easier to use a std benchstone (ie a norton india stone) and a gerber steel since the angles are wrong on the SM, sharpening an EKi is a little different than a std "V" grind, not harder, just different, with a little practice anyone can do it imho.

Who would you guys buy a cqc 15 from

i trust tadgear, but im not sure if they have the 15. their prices are always very competitive. you may find it cheaper elsewhere, but finding a net company that you can trust is not always easy.

TAD is ok, newgraham.com is usually cheaper though,

ive never bought from them, but have heard nothing buy good things. i normally only recommend companies i have bought from previously. tadgear has an ongoing battle with my wallet! :D

Don't forget the '15 is half a recurve, which will make it... let's just say... interesting to sharpen on a flat stone, such as a benchstone or the EdgePro.

For sure, not as bad as the Commander or the LaGriffe (heh), but, still, kind of interesting.

a diamond rod would be best to sharpen a '15 imho, its been my experience that recurves arent as bad as some think.

What would you recommend for sharpening the CQC-11, and 12?

(I just bought the CQC-11 and planning on buying the 12)

IMHO, the best home sharpener system for normal (i.e. straight edges and not hawkbills or recurves) is the EdgePro. I have no relation to them; just a satisfied customer.

For the strange types... a diamond rod.
