emerson folder on Ebay

Hi Ross -
Joel Pirela is bidding on it. See earlier post - Raven Prototype.

I contacted the seller and here's the reply:
"Yes, the body is handshaped Micarta by Ernie Emerson. It is lined with black metal liners and works very well.
Meg
P.S. I will try to send more pictures"

This appears (I say this as I have not seen it in person) to be a Specwar, no date hand made custom. In the first string on this knife you'll see that the body is Micarta, not the production polymer.

It would appear it is not only a hand ground blade, but a completely hand made body as well.

It should be noted that the Raven was the FIRST production knife that EKI released when it was formed.

Well, I caught the last 5 minutes of the auction, and watched the price shoot up from $575 to $999 in typical e-bay fashion.

That being said I think that this is a rare bird indeed. I noticed the seller is associated with Timberline and that makes sense b/c this was the knife sent to Neeley for the final cad/cam programming on the handles of the production version. Other than that what I find to be so unique about this knife is that it is HOLLOW ground! How often do you see that on an Emerson knife? I would like to see that one in person.

I am curious, is the winner a Suspect?

Wow, and here I was thinking something was fishy about the deal, as in the dealer decided not to sell. Not that I would accuse anyone of that, but those things have been known to happen on Ebay, and other auctions.
I had put in my bid with a max at $450. I honestly thought I had a shot at this knife, but I should have known better ;)
I guess it's really no suprise that it sold for so much. I too am curious as to who won this one.
I guess I will take the money and either buy a Benelli or put more money down on a Bullitt Mustang or WS6 Formula Firebird.

I suppose I'll be gracious in losing on this one. It was one of four or five Ernie made sometime before 1995 (he usually made batches of five or so protos at a time). Its a zero chisel grind, just like he used to make back in the good old days before machinery, with all black t on the blade and liners. Hand contured handles, also like the real deal days, and excellent ergos. A picture of one of the others is mixed in the Gallery in a shot with about 7 other customs, taken in 1996, dating it pretty specifically.

This particular knife was used by Neeley to set up for the production handles, which is why the clip was taken off. Ernie must have thought pretty highly of the design to choose it as the very first model for the EKI, so this knife has some genuine historical merit. Its my personal opinion that the winner of this knife (bastid!!) made the best score on a handmade Emerson since you could buy a 6 from Les for $675!! One of 5, made in the mid 90's, for under $1,000! Good thing he's a nice guy...

Thank you , sir :)

Thank you especially for the history. I have not seen any custom Ravens before this auction(I missed the pic of one you mentioned in the gallery). The information JohnH posted after the Blade Show mentioned that the Raven was to be replaced by the "Blackbird", that motivated me to place a bid. I had no idea of the history behind it. I have always wanted to purchase a Raven but the injection moulded liners did not appeal to me.

I think I missed out on an ES1-M satin a while back... ;) The feelings mutual

:D

Yep,....had a look at the link. There's several 'rare birds' there.... :D
(submit by Anon.)? ...shy guy ;)

Yeah, thanks alot Bob. I saw this knife the day it was listed and immediately emailed the guy about it. I was planning on buying it until Bob told all the Suspects about it. Way to go ;)

Just playing around but I did see it the first day and the guy told me everything he knew about it. I tried to buy it from him but he said he wanted to wait and see what it brought. I don't think he had any idea it would bring that much. To us though, that was cheap.
