Emerson grind angle

Greetings,

I received a Lansky Deluxe Sharpening System for Christmas. I know Emerson knives are sharpened on one side but I haven't been able to find what angle the edge is. I'm wanting to keep the angle as close to the original edge angle as possible. The Lansky sharpener has 4 angles-17, 20, 25, and 30 degrees. If anyone has any tips or suggestions using a Lansky on an Emerson knife, I'd be interested. If this has been covered elsewhere on the Blade Forum, could someone point me that direction, as I have yet to stumble across it. I have a Roadhouse, a Mini Commander, and an SOCFKB.

Thanks
Fred

The answer is... it depends. The angle that is going to match your factory knife depends on the knife, the height of the knife when clamped and the sharpener. Since the Lansky only offers set angles, you're going to have to experiment to find the best angle to use to match the factory angle. The easiest way to do it is to mark the edge with a colored Sharpie. You'll know if you're matching the angle if the marker comes off with several strokes.

In my experience with Emerson knives and a Wicked Edge, I've found that the V-Grind Emersons (CQC-10, Roadhouse) have a primary angle of 23-27 degrees and a 15 degree angle on the other side. A chisel grind Emerson like the CQC-7 will have a secondary angle of 0 degrees.

Will definitely take trial and error to find. Take care to observe the clamp; the depth the blade is set will effect angles a good bit, and adjusting the clamp so the flats of the blade and the clamp are square to each other, which also has an effect.
