I saw these and they looked like a pretty good deal. They are made with AUS8, a steel I really like, easy to sharpen and holds an edge for normal EDC all day, and I very lightly use my EDC knives. Well I've been wanting an emerson for a while to see what the quality was like and I thought I'd start with one of these.

I know every Emerson is made in the USA, but what about these? They are a good third the price of most with a Japanese steel, and they made in China or Taiwan? What is the Quality of this Emerson 'byrds'? How's the lock?

They are both made by emersom arent they? Have you had bad experience with the emerson HW knives?

No, they are made FOR Emerson, to Emerson specs. Not quite the same thing. Trust me - you will be happier with a USA made Emerson.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the HW are bad, just not the same as the real deal.

From Emerson's site, about the HW line:

"The knives are manufactured in Japan by G. SAKAI Co. and represent the quality standards and specs that I demanded and the quality of craftsmanship that you already know they produce. "

Eh, I'll save for a CQC-7. Definatley a cool gift for someone though. Or PSK? Car knife? I'll pick up a emersom HW before the year is out.

I have one of each of the HardWare knives and they are fine knives. Nothing the matter with them in the least. All of mine lock up nice with no blade play, have great grippiness to them and keep a decent edge. In fact they were quite sharp right up there with the best knives I've ever bought from any manufacturer.

They also Wave right nice rather quickly too with a quick hook notch cut out in the raised spine. About ten minutes plus or minus.

At their price point, they are very good knives. Comparable to other FRN-handled knives from other quality manufactures. I have the Endeavor which is the largest of the line [3.4" clip blade]. Sharp out of the box and a real working utility knife.

How much superior is using a titanium liner lock when there are reports of excessive blade play and faulty fit-and-finish on some models? I find that 154CM holds an edge longer than AUS-8, but the AUS-8 is easier to sharpen for two reasons: it's double-beveled and the steel responds quicker and faster to ceramics. The regular US-made Emerson's are chisel ground and most of the models are made specifically for self-defense purposes, not all-around utility.

I think the Hardwear line make for better utility knives: cheaper than the US-made line, quality materials, finished to Emerson specs, and they don't veer off to one side when you cut something like the chisel ground Emerson's. :)
