I just came acroos the Emerson Karambits and was wondering what you thought of them as an EDC? I also want to know which blade style you like?

I am particularly interested in the Bullnose and Commander because the blade types look more versatile then the Combat Karambit blade and they also look less intimidating.

I would appreciate any opinions of the knives and the wave feature and the durability of their liner locks. The only other knives I have owned are Benchmade Axis knives.

Thanks in advance.

I picked up one back when they first came out. It's a rugged, reliable, very purpose-built blade. I can't imagine using one for daily utility, though; it's really a small fighter and nothing else. Maybe in one of the blade styles you mention it would be more versatile, but I'd see it as a self-defense blade first and foremost.

Phil,

If self-defense was one of the purposes for the knife, what do you think of it overall and what do you think of it for self-defense?

Thanks,

Bill

It IS a self defense knife. Using it for an EDC would be like taking an M4 on a deer hunting trip.

As for the knife itself. Well, Phil said it. The knife is built well, as are most Emersons.
I've always been interested in learning the art behind the use of the karambit but I've always been too lazy. :)

Edit: Look up some karambit videos on youtube. They're very entertaining to watch.

The regular combat kerambit is aimed at SD but the other blade shapes are more utility orientated.
The hooked blade is what your making use of when using the kerambit for fighting, the other blade styles while not usless are just not as good for kerambit techinques.
The bull nose, 7 and commander kerambit are pretty much just the same as a "regular" knife and should be used the same way.

I carry a folding karambit every day. I switch between a 5.11 Tarani karambit (Master's and Journeyman versions) and the Emerson Combat Karambit. I carry one specifically for self-defense if ever needed and for no other reason. I don't use mine for cutting tasks or daily use.

I carry another smaller folder for cutting.

The Emerson Combat Karambit can definitely be used for other tasks but the Bullnose and Commander versions could most certainly play dual roles as both self-defense and practical cutting. I'm not so sure the reverse grip style works as well with those two models though like the Combat Karambit does.

If you want a karambit that you can use for multi-purpose then I say go for one of the other Emerson variants. If you want one purely for back-up self defense then look at the 5.11 karambit and Emerson Combat Karambit.

If your budget is big and you are a karambit lover like me then buy one whenever you can and own several in the end!!!!

imho if ya want a k'bit and train with the k'bit get a std k'bit, i dont think the other blade designs are gonna work as well.

a k'bit, while designed for SD, will function "ok" as a utility knife as long as its just ued for opening boxes, letters/etc, no whittling or anything like that.

really IIRC the k'bit was originally just that, a utility tool.

I EDC the properly shaped EKI karambit for SD, and a separate utility blade. The other blade shapes (bullnose, etc) make no sense to me.
