Hey bladeforums,

I am in the process of expanding my knife collection and I decided I wanted a new Emerson Knife.
So far I have narrowed it down to the Commander, the sheepdog and the CQC 15 but I really can't decide.
Does anyone have experience with these knives or have any opinions on them.

Thanks in advance.

What would you like to know? Intended uses? The 3 listed are pretty different IMO as I have owned all 3.

I would go with whichever blade shape you like best. More than likely they will fit like a glove, some more than others.

Be sure to look at the size difference between the Minis and Regulars. Mini Emerson's name is quite deceitful as they are actually closer in size to an average pocket knife. Regulars can be on the larger side with Super and Uber Emersons nearing pocket sword status.

CQC-15 for sure. It was my first Emerson and it's been a reliable EDC for almost 3 years. The tanto is good for penetration and the recurve slices through material really well. The handle is very ergonomic and will accommodate fairly large hands comfortably. I've cut cardboard, zip ties, aluminum cans, tape, and many other media and its gelt up superbly. No chips or major damage. I can't recommend it enough. I have both a custom and a production. Here's a few pics of mine.

Thanks for all the responses
rayster357 the knife will be used mainly used for everyday tasks (cardboard, zipties) but I am buying it specifically to be taken camping, hiking, etc.

Silvananus, those cqc 15s looked very nice, I love the blade shape on that knife.
I like the commander's great big recurve as well. Its a very tough decision. A little reluctant to buy the sheepdog because of the new bearing system, since its a new thing with the Emersons I dont know how reliable it will be and I dont want to be out camping and have it clog up with dirt or something.

Once again thanks for all the responses

15 for sure, the most uniquely Emerson of the bunch.

Shannon's right. Two of the most iconic and quintessential Emerson models are the CQC-7 and the Commander. Ernie pretty much combined the most notable attributes of both knives into the CQC-15. It's the best of both worlds

Tanto? Why not Super Roadhouse. Only thing better is a blacked out model

The Super Roadhouse is awesome, here's a full Custom humbling a full sized 610 Rukus. I miss that one (actually both of them).

Emerson is the CQC7 or the Commander.
Get the one that appeals to you.

Of the three, I'd go with the 15. You'll find it to be the most versatile as well. And I agree with you about the bearing knife not being the one to have in the woods. The Commander is a lot of blade at that size.

Right about that !

I bought a micro-Commander to finally get that blade mass down to a functional size. It's a 2.9" blade that looks and works like at least a 3.25-incher.

Finally scaled down to a size knon-knifers would consider a 'pocket knife,' it's a close to perfect as you can want for EDC.

I say the 15 as well. I have been edc'ing one for two years and it is a great knife. The tanto point easily pierces that tough clamshell plastic packaging so many items are using nowadays, which makes it safer to get them open.

The recurve blade is a good cutter, too. I agree it is the best of both worlds. I have a Super Commander also, and if I had to choose only one to keep, it would be the 15 for sure.

15 is a great first, it gives a tanto, without a full tanto, a recurve, without the big sweeping curve, and it fits the hand wonderfully. A full size 15 BTS is my work knife, does everything!

The commander is my favorite and I like to keep my blades under 3.5, so I got two mini commanders, and 1 micro. =) Love them. But whichever one you decide to go with, you won't be disappointed.

This.^
dunt over look the iconic Bowie. CQC13

One other factor in favor of the 15 (and mini 15) is that they are the most "blade efficient" Emerson models I've seen (blade to handle ratio).

You can't go wrong with the CQC-15. It's got a little bit of everything and in spades. A bit of Tanto point, a good amount of forward belly and recurve, and a solid handle that locks in with any grip.
