Emerson Knives: A general Fluke

A couple of weeks ago I aquired a 2000 Commander. Great knife. I have no complaints, nor have I had to make any adjustments. Works just like it was advertised to work. Very sharp too.

Man, what a way to introduce yourself. Emerson knives are not pretty or fancy gent knives, but they are functional and solid. They have a no questions asked policy when it comes to ordering parts like pivot or handle screws, thumb discs or pocket clips and if you have a problem with the knife, they will fix it. Also, Emerson folders are designed to be taken apart if the user wishes to do so and it will not void the warranty (unlike other production knives).

Loose screws? That's nothing a little loctite won't fix. Did you try to tighten the screws? Were the threads worn? If so, did you send it back to Emerson Knives for service?

If your knife did fall apart as you said, have you contacted Emerson Knives for warranty service? If so, what did they say?

You never mentioned if the knife was sent back to them so they can have a look at it. If it indeed was EKI's problem, they need to know about it directly, but not in this fashion. I know they stand behind their products 110%. I have 4 Commanders myself along with several other various models of Emerson's knives and they all haven't given me any problems. Last year I spent a day visiting the Emerson production facility and personally watched as they assembled PSARKs and Commanders. The assembly room folks are very diligent and pay very good attention to each step of the process. It's hard for me to believe they would let something like that get sent out with the company name on it.

There are no if's and's or but's. This guy either (1) was sold a bad knock-off of an Emerson, or (2) is a troll making up this story. Period.

Emerson knives are not my thing. I tend more towards small fixed blades and slip joint folders. However, plenty of good folks around here who use thier knives hard seem to think highly of them.

Now, sometime back there was quite an obvious patternt of threads that were very similar to this one. That is, somebody would register and their first, and many time only post was to say what junk Emerson knives are. Ok then, lets take your post here and see just what you are really trying to say.

Your quotes:

While the materials are good, with nice sharp edges, good retention, these knives are horrendous in quality.

The first few days I had my commander I liked it, except for the very light, cheap feel

So, you liked it and thought the materials were good, even though it felt light and cheap? Did you think it felt cheap after it supposedly fell apart, or before?

Then I pulled it out to show a friend and it had literally come APART . The screws had come loose and only half of the knife was clipped to my pocket.

Uh....yeah. Are you saying the other half came out in your hand? So it left just one handle slab and liner with the exposed blade now? Ok.

I came to find out that my local shop discontinued the brand because "They fell apart in customers' hands,

I have handled dozens of Emersons when I was still into tac-folders at gunshows, and saw many others handle them at shows as well. Out of a huge number of them I have seen being flicked and handled, not one has ever "fallen apart in a customers hand". So I find it hard to beleive that one store got an entire shipment of lemmons in.

Now don't get me wrong, they are great knives, good, strong materials, but they are not built well.

So, which is it? Thats the second time you have referred to them and how great they are, and how good and strong and what nice materials they use, but then turn around and say it just fell apart in your pocket after a couple of days with no use?

You need to go back and make up another story and try again.

Clawhands,

No problems with my 2000 Commander or 99 CQC-7, and I've never heard of one practically exploding.

That sounds like a really nice knife for a 15 year old to have. Put a little loctite on the pivot screw and enjoy and be careful with it.

Try contacting Derek over in the Emerson Forum, I am sure that he will be more than happy to take your knife back to see what is wrong with it. If there are any problems I have always know the good people at Emerson Knives to stand behind their products. From what you have said there is a problem with that specific knife - or you are a Troll.

Regards,

Ed

I guess it is a nice knife for a 15 year old to have. Knives are the only things ive ever really spent my money on. Thank you joe cop for the tip. i tried the loctite and it worked well. Still not to happy about the light feel, but at least I'm not having any problems. And by the way, what is a troll? And the person who said to adjust that medication: you're right...prozac...

P.S. Just kidding about the prozac:)

:o I think I found out what a troll is, and no I am not trying to make up stories for the fun of it. I am a serious person and would not knock something or give it great words unless I knew what I really meant. So if you still have any troll hunting to do make sure you don't cut me down, I'm just a peasant on the bridge.:)

Regards,
Steve.

Well, I had a "Zippo" folder literally explode on me a few years back, but it was a $2.00 give-away from a vendor of building products.

Hard to believe your story. Do you mean that the pivot pin backed-out? That is improbable if not impossible.

I am no fan of Emerson knives, as the one and only one I bought was gritty, the "hard-chrome" finish unappealing (to me) and the placement of the thumb disk did not happen to suit my hand size. But I wouldn't go around crapping about their production.

As Dexter indicated above, contacting the company before this sort of posting is the only honorable way to proceed in this sort of situation.

This is one of the most ridiculous Posts of 2002:barf: :barf:

An Emerson commander falls apart in one's pocket. This is beyond silly, this is absurd.......Back to the pain Meds!!!!

be well my friends.................Ira;)

I've never owned an emerson, but I've handled a few. Light and cheap are two words I would not use to describe them.

Chris

I only own one emerson and currently I am having a problem sorted out wiht it. Even so, I do not think they construct knives cheaply or with cheap materials. I don't know if you are a troll or not, clawhands, but you seem to be posting on a lot of emerson threads with nothing really constructive to ask or state.

Hello , I too own an emerson knife. I carry it every day. The only problem I have ever had was a screw on the belt clip came out. Some how I found the screw in the floor of my truck along with enough change to buy me a soda and a bag of penuts. An allen wrench fixed my problem in 20 seconds. Maybe by chance you have the "one bad apple in the barrel" Contact the folks at emerson and give them the chance to correct the problem if there is one. These knives are made to work and still keep their edge. Maybe you just bought a product you don't like for no apparent reason. I have bought things that when I got it home ; If that is your case ; go to a gun show and trade the knife for one that you do like. Of all things I wear I want my knife to fit me .

I just got my first Emerson (well... I had a benchmade CQC7) in trade to use as a "heavy use" (BIG envelopes:rolleyes: ) knife. When I first opened it, to my surprise:eek: ) it DIDN'T fall apart!!! Nor did it the next 50 or so times I opened it!!!
It is very light for its bulk, but it does have titanium liners. It looks like a user to me. I am happy with it so far.
