Emerson Lockuup: Send in for a fix?

So I've heard that you can send in your Emerson knife in to them for some maintenance if needed. I just bought a pre-owned 2005 Combat Karambit that seems to have a lock bar travel issue -- it goes waaay over on the tang. It might pop off the opposite side if I pushed with a little force.

I have a number of Emerson knives and pictured below, I'm comparing the 05 Karambit with a 2010 Super CQC-7. You can definitely tell that the liner is thicker on the 2010. I've tightened down the pivot a bit too -- I actually like my knives a little tight.

Do you think Emerson would actually take this as a "repair"? Or am I being ridiculous? I guess they could bend it back a little. I don't imagine they'd go as far as replacing the lock.

Note that the Super CQC-7 below is essentially brand new and doesn't exhibit much lock-bar travel

My CQC-13 has a deep lock up as well. In some two years(IIRC) of hard use, it has yet to get any deeper, and has never failed. Use it and don't think about it.

Are you kidding me. EKI will fix that for you no questions asked, it's what they pride them selves on. Send it in and post a pic when it returns :)

I had a new 05 CQC7 with the same issue. Must have been a bad year. I can't believe Emerson would consider it an issue in terms of warranty. Keep us posted.

Yep, I wrote them and asked if it really looked like it was an issue or if I'm just being silly. I don't want to waste their time or mine. I don't want to be a whiny bitch if it's not warranted. :) But in the end, Customer Service wrote back and said send it in. It seemed like a form letter of some kind, so they didn't really address whether or not they thought it was a problem.

I'm actually curious how you fix something like this -- a new locking liner? Bending back the old one will not do because of the way the tang rests. I dunno, we'll see. They know what they're doin'!

Or that:) I just read somewhere about the lock side being replaced in some instances. I had a CQC-10 that's lock side was really thick, thick to the point that I couldn't see it wearing for a long while. It was 2011 production though.

Ghostmeat,
I sent my Mach 1 in to EKI several weeks ago to repair a failing liner lock after speaking with them over the phone. The knife was returned to me in 3 weeks and it looked as if it had been completely rebuilt. It had a new liner lock, new pivot screw and new handle screws. It is now functioning beautifully. The only cost to me was shipping. I am very pleased with their customer service as well as the product.

after hearing your story, i'm positive Mr. Emerson can help fix my problem :D
i love his knives, they're workhorses.

Alright, we're good here. Looks good to me. I sent the Karambit maybe a week and a half ago and it came in some time this past week. For the record, when I sent this in, I actually sent the photo I originally posted in this thread...I figured it illustrated the issue pretty well.

It's just an updated, thicker titanium liner. I don't know if it's intentional, but note how the corrected lockup (as well as the original 2010 Super CQC7) lines up with the blade cutting edge. Perfecto. Good to go.

Ghostmeat,

Did you tell Emerson CS that you'd bought it pre-owned? If they knew you didn't purchase it new and still repaired it, that is really some fantastic customer service.

Thanks,

When they sent it back to me, they sent a catalog too and the warranty guarantee is there on the back. There, yes, it does say they supply the warranty to the original owner. I don't have my original letter and I forget if I said I'm the 2nd owner -- I don't think I did. If I slipped that one by, sorry Mr. Emerson!

But small print is not something I would expect a real American business like EKI would hide behind. American made. American serviced. In for the long haul. Period.

...and after saying that, I think this thread just because a big ad for Emerson Service. :)

It's one of those unsaid understandings-- EKI simply will repair every knife out their doors, no matter how many owners it's had. It's part of the premium you pay for the brand.
