I have been looking at both of these knives for a while now, and I need some opinions. I would get a plain edge in either of these knives and they would be for self defense EDC. I already own a BM 710 and I'm concerened that the AFCK would be to similar but it looks like a sweet knife. I have never owned an Emerson, but I do own a BM CQC7 that I've had for years and have abused the hell out of at work. I would like opinions on which knife is stronger and any negative or positive opinions. Another question that I have- is the Mach 1 sharpened on both sides or is it a chisel grind?

I love my AFCK! Great design, super lock, and scary sharp!

I don't own an Emerson either, but I hear that Emerson production knives have very poor pins/screws and that the pivot screw likes to back out. Other than design though, Emerson copied Benchmade's processes to the "T".

BTW, many Emersons are chisel ground, but I don't know which ones specifically. It would probably be best to check with Emerson.

Actually I think all Emerson's have a chisel edge, but are not all chisel ground. Basically this means that all their knives are only sharpened on one side, while some are ground on both sides. If you do get one that is gorund on both sides it is not at all hard to but a standard edge on it if you don't like the chisel edge.

I don't care for the AFCK as far as it's look/style but it is a great knife, and with the Benchmade you will get a better made/finished knife for your money.

They're both good knives, but I'd go with the AFCK. I really think the axis lock is superior to even the best liner locks. I own a 710 and have handled the AFCK and they are completely different knives, nothing really similar about them other than the Axis lock. Oh yeah, and that black coating on the blade :barf: Emerson's coating is worse in my experience though, it seems much thinner, but at least you have a choice to not get it.

Not saying the Mach1 isn't a good knife, I just can't think of any way it's better than the AFCK, black coating aside.

I have been able to rock the blade and make bade noises with every emerson i have handled, they are really good knives with the exception of the locks.

AXIS AFCK!

IMHO, it's hard to find a more ergonomic and secure handle as the Emerson Mach 1. It's impossible to go wrong between the two. Personally, I like the blade of the AFCK better, but the handle is about perfect on the Mach 1 which gives it the nod.
Not to cause trouble, but a Mini AFCK with an Axis Lock and S30V blade would be the best thing that ever happened.

I own both knives (two AFCKs). The AFCK IMO is a far better knife. Whille I like the Mach-1, the AFCK has thicker liners and a better finish on the G-10. It feels like a much sturdier knife overall. And my AFCKs outcut my Mach-1 by a large margin. Now my '98 Commander is a different story.:D

Axis lock is better than liner lock, especially taking into consideration that Emerson’s liner lock is worse (thinner liners and far less consistent lockup) than BM one on classic AFCK. Choosing between BM classic AFCK (liner lock) and any EKI knife I also would definitely go with BM.
More reasons: Mach-1 is more expensive and the knives I have dealt with were worse executed than BM’s. Single-sided sharpening (Mach-1) has no real advantages over conventional sharpening (AFCK) and could cause a lot of trouble performing precise cutting tasks. Closed position retention also is not the strongest side of EKI knives, especially taking into consideration their tip-up carry position.
Axis AFCK is also set up for tip-up carry (newer models can be turned to tip-down carry) but it holds closet position incomparably securer than Emerson’s liner locks. Classic AFCK is set up for tip-down carry...

Handling comfort and security are closely comparable.

However, one point for EKI, to be possibly objective. Their knives have – if I recall well – black titanium nitride coating what is significantly harder and less prone to get scratched than BM black teflon coating.
