In this case $20 more for Emerson, same steel, same size.
And, isn't MOD made by Microtech?

Which would you recommend?
I like the handle of the MOD, the blade a little better on the Emerson.

I don't know anything about the Emerson, but you can't go wrong with the Tempest, IMO. It does have a great handle (like you said) and the pocket clip is nice and stiff, plus you can make it tip up or tip down carry. About the strongest pluss for me is the sturdy liner lock. It has the thickest liner lock I've ever seen. There is a review and some really good pictures here. Just click on MOD Tempest review when you get there. :)

When you see the picture of the liner lock, remember that the blade is over 1/8" thick, just to put in perspective how thick the liner lock is.

MOD is not made by MT. i think the old MOD owner might have worked for MT, something like that, but they arent the same company, blackhawk owns MOD now.

of the 2 knives ya listed, iw ould get neither, i have never been crazy about MOD unless ya can get a deal on one from an individual, too high $$ for the quality imho. i would rather (much rather actually) have a BM skirmish than any MOD folder, better steel/design/lock/price, though the MODs are servicable knives, i think BM is better, as is MT/EKI/etc, just better stuff around imho. for the money........

of all the emerson knives, the mach is one of my least favs, not waved, nothing neat about it really imho, get a SOCFK, or a persian tactical (P-Tac) or a CQC8 or even a CQC7, all of them much nicer imho than a mach, never really liked the mach, spec war myself. all of them are good knives, just imho there are better ones, your first emerson should be waved.

now i dont hate MOD/etc, they are perfectly good functional knives, if thats what grabs ya, go for it, MOD simply isnt my cup of tea, but thats why theres chocolate and vanilla i suppose........

I have had both knives and currently own two MOD Tempests. Don't get either one. The two MOD's I have are nib over the holidays. The second pe I rec. has a miserable liner lock. You can't push it shut with your hand but tapping it out towards the tip makes it fail. The other pse I rec. before Xmas well the pivot adjustment won't let me adjust tension on it. It just spins around. Like it is loctited in there. Both have very thick edges and are hard to get that really good grabby hair poppin sharp that I like. I love the handles on them though. Some other QC issues I have with them too. I emailed Michael Janich and have yet to hear anything on them. Bummed to as I have abit of dough tied up in each one. keepem sharp

PS Don't care for EKI's either. Have had a bunch of them and none of them I thought lived up to there hype.

PSS Just spoke with Mr. Janich via email. I have called the service # and will return the knives for service under warranty. We will see how they come back. The door is still open for me to have these as my edc knives as I love the handle config. and the ergo's.

Wow, I never imagined people would ever say the Tempest isn't a really great knife. One thing I didn't mention in my first post is the great blade coating mine has. I spent today redoing a room in a house and I cut a lot of carpet with my tempest. The blade is still very sharp and the coating doesn't have any marks on it. I mean not even one little mark. I still think my Tempest is a great knife!

I second the good opinion on the Tempest.
I would take one Tempest over two Emersons for the same price!

My tempest remains in the safe next to a handfull of other folders(LCC,SOCOM ELITE,Dominator,Sebenza ect.) as one of my favorite folders.

Unlike the single bevel Emersons it can actually be sharpened, the lock is thick and fitted perfectly and the locking liner could be replaced if needed.Unless your looking to just stab things and not concerned with cutting efficiency
stay away from the single bevel ground Emersons.Just my opinion.

I have had a Hornet and Trident and they were built great also.

The tempest IMO was the best MOD folder built or a multitude of uses.

ya can get EKI's plenty sharp if ya try. the single sharpest knife i have ever seen in my life is a zero bevel grind emerson CQC8, there isnt ANYTHING sharper, just cant be, and ya gotta remember that EKI's are designed more for SD than utility, the chisel grind works just fine in that regard, and w/a little work any good chisel grind can be made very sharp, just takes a little work.

I had no problem getting the ones I have owned sharp but like you said, they are better for self defense and not all around cutters because of the edge geometry.

Sending my Temepests back today. Actually I may have misstated the problems. The liner lock on my black bladed Tempest fails. Only when doing the spine whack test. Not very hard either. I love the ergo's on the knives but the two I have the edges seem to be pretty thick so a bitch to get sharp like I like them. I am having the pse blade swapped for a pe and they will sharpen them to a razors edge I have been assured. They are also fixing the liner lock free. The new blade costs 25 plus shipping and handling. Have the repair# now so they should have them by Fri. Hope all goes well as the grip on these knives is superb for me. keepem sharp
