I'm looking into buying my first Emerson and had grown fond of the mini commander. The only thing that is bugging me is how the pocket clip is positioned. Does the knife sit crooked in your pocket or does this position have a purpose? I don't have a chance to hold one in person so I'm hoping you guys can give me the info I want. Thanks.

Generally sits however I put the knife in if its G10 regardless of the knife. I tend to push the knife back into the seem of the pocket. Just gotta make sure you slide forward before pulling it out or the wave will catch.

Looking at my Mini Commander right now. If the clip went straight down and not at an angle, it would get in the way of the finger choil area. I honestly don't notice that it sits crooked in my pocket.

Imagine the white paper is your jeans pocket, the wave is begging to be deployed. The Mini Comm is one of my favorite Emerson designs!

I'm right handed, I push the knife over to my inner right leg pocket side when I don't want the wave to deploy easily.

It's so the clip is centered on the body of the knife. You'll never notice it in your pocket.

Thanks for the picture spkn01. That looks like it sits pretty well in pocket. After looking through more of the emerson knives, i also came across the horseman. Which would you guys prefer? I like the blade shape of it, but it doesn't look like it has that much belly. The knife will just be used as an edc, nothing in particular. If you guys have any other ideas on an emerson that would be great. I generally want a 3.5 inch blade stonewash. Thanks.

The commander is hard to beat. I like the recurve blade; it draws into whatever is being sliced and allows the knife to do more of the work. I'm partial to the commander and mini-commander. I carried a mini-commander today, which to my mind is nearly the perfect size pocket knife.

I have no complaints about the angle of the clip. If I wear different trousers, the knife sits differently in each pair if hung on the edge of the pocket, just like any other knife does. I think the angle is fairly inconsequential. If you intend to use the wave feature, it's a matter of practicing with the knife in whatever pair of pants you intend to carry the knife, until you're comfortable with what it will or won't do.

Personally, I'd never rely in the wave feature. It's nice, but counting on snagging the knife to open it can be hit or miss, especially under pressure. If you don't count on it, you won't ever be disappointed if the knife doesn't open. My experience has been that it's more likely to snag the knife open when I'd rather not open it, than the other way around, but the bottom line is it's a matter of training to do with the knife whatever you want to do.

So far as carrying and using, the mini-commander is one of my favorite pocket knives. I like the Commander as well, but the mini is the perfect size for most things.

I have both the Horseman and the mini comm. I really like the feel and ergo. of the mini comm, it feels like it's molded into my hand. The ergo on the Horseman is not bad either. The recurve on the mini comm will be harder to sharpen while the Horseman was designed to both stab and cut. The comm blade shape is more for cutting than stabbing. Both are in stock right now at gpknives for very good price!

I am actually weighing up those very two models - I want to buy one in the near future.
Love the EDC-ability of the horseman's blade. But something tells be the mini-comm has better ergos? - the gimping. the deep choil (for opening and grip), the more rounded 'guard' - easier to open? It is a more recent design too.
What do you think please?

Smithkzn, well a Horseman just landed for me. Love the blade shape! As far as ergos are concerned, I still prefer the Mini Commander.

No Mini Comm picture to share as it's on the way to EKI to be refurbed, BUT, I do have a picture of a Prestige Reliant...

In general I prefer the finger choil area of the Reliant/Mini Commander. The area right after the finger choil cut out is slightly narrower on the Horseman. The extra width on the Reliant/Mini Comm seems to add more comfort for me.

I have small hands, and the Horseman feels OK in regular grip. BUT in reverse grip it feels MUCH better for me.

Thanks for that.
I have large hands. I see the choil is 'tighter' on the horseman.
It's a blade shape vs ergos thing it seems.
Gee, I might just have to get both

Yes, for me the mini comm feels better in the hands-- but than damn recurve, I'm scared to have to sharpen it.

Sharpen it just like anything else. It's a gentle recurve, and it's a non-issue if sharpened on a round stone or rod. A wheel or belt makes it a simple event.

I sold my BM710 'cos of the recurve. Bit I think with the right equipment it may be fine. I mean, they make recurves. People buy them, there's gotto to be a way to sharpen them. What's the best system guys?

A few things I've noticed about my Horseman as compared to a mini com I had ...... the stonewashed / satin finish on the horseman's blade is much nicer than the ceramic finish my old mini com had. Do the new mini coms still have the satin ceramic finish?... if yes it might be a turn-off

Another thing I've noticed about my Horseman ( 2011 production) is the frame on the lock side is slightly thicker than the opposite side making for a more substantial lock. The Horseman also has a nice heft to it.... this could be my imagination , but it does feel heavier than the mini com did ( from memory). Overall the Horseman is my favorite Emerson knife replacing my SOCFK.

I traded one of my Horsemen knives ( yes I'm nuts) with a forum member, if he sees this maybe he'll chime in , but I think he really liked the Horsemen too.

Yes, I read Emerson had Beefed up the lock liner.
From online sale sites - looks like all the 'silver' knives have the SF finish now. I hate coated blades! Or bead blasted blades.
And that 's a nice pic too!
thanks

I just bought a 2009 mini-commander with a stone washed blade. The liner is considerably thicker than older commanders.

yep, Emerson stopped doing coated/cerakote blades back in 07/08. All stonewash or DLC now.
