hello, an invader from the blade-with-a-hole tribe here. i'm curious about the 50-state legal configurations of emerson. i like the cqc-14 but what can you say about the 14 when compared with other minis like the mini commander and the mini-15? also, i don't see that many titanium-bolstered versions on sale online and only one in the emerson site. are these made on order? thanks.

The only bolstered ones coming from EKI are customs. There are many customized productions that have had the modification done though.

Emerson's minis are not always so "mini" when compared to other brands. The mini-15, mini-Commander, and others still have blades that exceed the "magic" 3 inch line. Emerson does make a couple, or did anyway, that have blades <3 inches. The CQC-14, the micro-Commander, and the Traveler (disco'd) are the sub-3" offerings. Travelers are still available from some dealers, but the model is discontinued.

On the Snubby, Emerson has dropped a sub-3" blade into a full-sized handle to make a knife for folks with larger hands that will still be legal. The Traveler and micro-Commander have a handle more appropriate to the length of the blade. I don't remember whether the micro-Commander has been disco'd or not, but they are also still available from some Emerson dealers.

Like gooey said... bolstered Emersons are either custom made from the shop, or they are aftermarket customs sometimes called Po' boys. Some of these are quite nice and very high quality work.

My favorite Emerson for travelling is my mini A-100. It's a very clean looking knife, and doesn't get any negative attention. Blade length is just under 3". I like the A-100-M because it is short enough to be legal almost anywhere, it also doesn't have the attention getting wave feature.

If I need to get shorter I go for something Spyderco, like a G10 Lava. Emersons are uniformly constructed and a 2.5" EKI would be a stubby knife.

I'm on the lookout for a mini A-100. Gonna get bolsters and micarta for it. Other than a 6, I think that will be it unless an Eagle falls into my lap :)

Great minds... I'm going to send my Mini 100BT to Andrew for murdered PoBoy sometime after the holidays. Should be an uberclassy pocket companion.

I will start by apologizing about the quality of the photo but just to give you an idea of the size of a Mini CQC15, here it is next to a Manix2, it's not so mini. if you like the ergo's and size of the Manix2 you will love the Mini CQC15 but if you are looking for a small knife some of the others you mentioned would be your best bet.

^ Agree, the Mini-15 is the biggest small knife I can name. Super efficient, comfy, and effective. But it's not all that mini... Been said before, but it's the EKI PM2.

I'm actually thinking black linen micarta instead of canvass due to the petite size. Your thoughts??

yes, black linen or even paper micarta for a finer texture, or blasted black G10. Nath can even do DLC, and I was tempted to have him do that to my PSARK to make it all blacked out, but I decided to just have contoured & beadblasted Ti done that I might darken myself later.
