Been lurking on the Emerson forum for the last several days reading the posts and looking at all the pictures I can and visiting some of the online dealers.
I am in the market for my very first Emerson and as of right now I am leaning towards the Horseman Mini CQC-8.

Hope the members here dont mind me hanging around for awhile and asking some possibly stupid questions but as a traditional jackknife guy for many years this will be a rather big deal for me.

The Horseman is an excellent first Emerson, also consider the cqc 7, and the Mini Commander.

Welcome. Any Emerson you like and want to buy is a great first one. The Horseman has a large following. Since this is your first... while you wait for delivery I'd suggest reading and memorizing Silvanus' "Basic Owner's Guide" sticky at the top of the Emerson page. There'll be a quiz tomorrow.

^^^^^^^^ This.

A Horseman is a wonderful knife. If that's the one you've decided on as your first one--buy it. I bet you'll want a bigger one as your second. :)

My only tip to you would be to remember this:

As Dale said, read all you can here about receiving and breaking in your Emerson. They can be a bit different from other knives in that they usually require some PATIENCE and break-in at first. They are lifetime knives if treated well.

I've mentioned before that one may be underwhelmed upon first receiving their Emerson. Some of the beauty of an Emerson is the way it matures....be ready for a period of breaking it in. Don't take it apart immediately or throw the lube to it when you get it. Let it work in by using it, or at least cycling it quite a bit. With some patience for a couple of weeks, you won't be disappointed.

I have the horseman and the 8. I love them both but the horseman gets more pocket time. Great knife

For an EDC I would say the mini A100 or full size, slim but great all around blade.

From my experience, Commander had a too wide blade, so I sold it. As I wrote, Horseman felt a little shot in hand _after_ some period. I had the same mildly annoying feeling with mini-griptilian. But you might like Horseman. I just gave away my Horseman to a friend. He is not a knife-nut and can't compare it to other knives, so he loves it.

I also had mini-CQC7. Absolutely loved that one. The blade and handle length were very appropriate. But had to sell it.

Well, I've lurked for years. Have owned ZTs 0630 for a short while and it made me really curious about the CQC 7. Seems a better fit for me all around. Length and more of a compact size all around. I went for the spearpoint version with standoffs. I'm pretty excited but I know break in time will take some getting used to.

I just recieved my 8th Emerson, I have several 7s, Horseman, Mini Commander, and a Mini 15. I like them all. The Mini 15, the newest and it feels the best. Next would be the 7s.

I EDC a Horseman.
I have many knives and many of them are Emersons ... but the Horseman is my go-to folder.
Amongst the Emerson line, you won't be disappointed with the Mini CQC-8.

I've got a Horseman that I EDC also. It's nicely broken in and feels pretty good. But after that one I'd have to say I really like my CQC-7 for some reason. Maybe because it bit me within 2 minutes of owning it...lol
