Emerson opener pocket wear

In times past, I carried many a tactical (that is to say, one hand opening; most do not understand that does not have always to do with killing or soldering or policing) folder. I found pocket clips wear out jeans, cargo pants, and even supposed tactical clothing. There have been more than one pair that were ruined by pocket clips. Years ago, I also had Cold Steel Ti Lite when AUS8A was the steel of choice, and the handles were still Zytel. That folder had aggressive jimping on the guards designed for acting also as an opener. It ate my pants, and did not always deploy the blade. The design also was such that deploying vigorously enough would cause the blade to bounce off the lock to the closed position.

After several years and various different folders, it spurred a move to fixed blades. I carry one daily, but it is a defensive knife. It does NOT open letters or boxes, prepare food, and like ilk. The response was to go go traditional classic folders, SAKs, the lovely Douk Douk, the charming Mercator. They were useful, but not all were one hand opening. The ones that could were not designed to do so. The nice thing was to discard the tool was not a big deal if I wrecked the edge, or as was the case, accidentally carried the K55K wedged in a pocked and the belt onto the community college campus en route on foot to the coffee depot. Realizing that, it meant that such with a larger, heavier folder would not have happened. It would have been noticed and removed. Folders are not for fighting, but considering MBC is geared for use with folders, it is good to know how to fight with the tool if required. Folders deploy slower, open slower than the draw of a fixed blade. This is remedied by the Opener, but still just an adjunct.

This said, I've an affinity for Spyderco, and the Delica with the Emerson opener caught the eye. To those of you with experience with the Emerson opener, once called the Emerson Wave, how has it worn your clothing? Is it worth the money? Do you actually use it? Does it reliably open the knife without need to add a wrist flick, or modify the draw stroke?

Any folder will wear eventually. I just cannot live without my Spyderco Militaries :)

Still, I wear any pair of jeans over five years, so I'm fine with it.

Buy cheaper pants...then the rest of the pant will wear out the same time as the pocket. :D

Wait. What?

I'll try "Take the clip off." Maybe that's the kind of advice you are looking for.

"Tactical pants"?

To be half-way serious, yes Spyderco's Emerson Opener works.

I haven't noticed if it tears up my pockets, they are already chewed up by carrying my Military at work.

No I do not always "deploy" my Matriarch 2 using the wave.

And no. You do not need a special "draw stroke" Just lift the knife up and slightly to the rear.

And last..... it opens my beer on weekends.

Actually...I may have figured it out. Not all the way there yet....should have ignored the first two paragraphs, I think.

For a short time I carried a waved Horseman in IWB. As my waistband at the time was elastic (shorts), the wave catching the waistband didn't cause very much wear.

For me, there's more wear from the pocketclip than the wave feature. I am a Emerson user and have been a huge fan of the wave for the past 14+years as it is my favorite method of opening.

I find my pockets wear enough just from a cliping and unclipping a framelock.

I owned and carried a few Emersons and the wave and rough g10 significantly accelerated the wear!

Not to mention I almost never actually used the wave, only when practicing using it.

Deep carry pocket clip ;)
They have lesser tension so they don't wear your jeans as much...

I own and rotate a Zero Tolerance 0200ST, Spyderco Manix 2, Benchmade 550 Griptilian with G10 Wilkins scales, and an Emerson Combat Karambit and CQC-10 and none of my pockets wear like the pictures I see here. What the heck are you people doing to tear your pants up like this?

The rough Emerson G10 is what seems to wear on my pants & jeans.

Clips don't wear your pockets. (At least they shouldn't, and they don't in my personal experience) The handle material behind the clip wears my pockets.
The wave causes zero wear. The G10 scales cause plenty. The absolute worst wear I ever got on my pockets was from a Buck Strider folder. That son of a gun chewed through 4 pairs of pants, and quick! I swear the handle was like a cheese grater.

I don't carry clipped that much, but when I do my Emersons feel the most secure in my pocket.

I like Emerson G-10 texturing the most of any brand. The only thing I've had to do is loosen the clip's grip on my karambit with a little bending, to where it has just the slightest telegraph key, but it still holds fine. Takes a bit of the wear off when it's a little looser. The other Ems have been fine. I don't get a lot of wear because I don't speed-draw them that much. Haven't really*noticed any wear or tear from waving.

Since I got into Emersons very early on, they tended to make me pull a knife from clipped position by pulling up the clip tip slightly with my finger to lessen pressure as I draw it. One of those things that becomes innate and subconscious after a while. Sort of like going slowly*when dipping a hand into a knife pocket in case the blade is out. So maybe that's why I'm not a pant destroyer.

I also have a Ti–Lite and know what the OP means about the edgy guards. I don't really mind that as it has a positive effect when you DO want to wave the knife. And you can always file or knurl them to tame that a bit. On that particular knife, many think the guard is shaped wrong. It's shaped perfectly though for holding in an edge-up position, thumb under, finger over. Sicilian. :)

I don't seem to get the pocket wear a lot of people complain about. Maybe I don't draw my knives nearly*as much as some. And I don't spend a lot of time practicing the wave, especially with Emersons---the wave works so well I don't feel the need for constant rehearsal.

I wonder....do some people have a 'waving' affliction, in the same order as people who will sit there and thumb their blades open and closed constantly? I can see how that would eat the pants.

EDIT: The only caveat I'm aware of on a wave is that when you get that feature your knife will tend to start opening very easily coming out of your pocket, especially if your pant is a tad snug, compared to a non-wave knife. If it snags in any way it's going to semi-open at the least. Be very careful that first month you own it. You'll see what I mean. It's not a problem though. You adapt gracefully.....

I have a waved Felice, and it works great! As good, maybe even better than some Emersons due to the narrower width and no thumb stud to push away from the wave.

I havent had a wave wear my pockets, the rough Emerson g10 does, as others have said.

I'd say get one! Its great!
