I've got a new Emerson coming in the mail I'm gonna wanna convert to Left hand carry, and was wondering if any of y'all knew what size tap and die I'm gonna wanna buy, and where to get it at. (Local hardware stores don't seem to have 'em that small) Also wondering if there's any idiosyncracies involved in drilling and tapping the titanium liner I need to look out for?

Sure. 2-56. All you need to do the conversion is a #48 or #51 drill bit. I prefer the #51 personally but the other will work it just makes the hole a tad bit bigger. Then after that all you need is the taper threader for the 2-56 size. If you have a drill press you don't even need a wrench for the tap. Just use the press to hold it and turn it by hand holding the knife flat on something while you work it to cut the threads. I usually mark the hole and use the clip as a template. Drill the first hole clean through. Then tap both the G10 and the liner with threads. Screw the clip down using the original screw for just that one first hole and then drill the other one, then tap and thread it and screw it down and so on to the third and you are home free.

You can order the taper tap from Jantz supply 1-800-351-8900 for $3.95 each. Texas knife maker has them also but they are $8.95 from them. Get two or three because they do break easy. Just be very careful when threading not to put too much lateral force on it by binding it sideways and go slow keeping it straight as you turn it.

Hope that helps

That's very helpful! Thank you!

Now if I can get them without a $25 charge for shipping to Alaska I'll really be crappin' in high cotton!:D

The only thing I can add to the above is to be very careful of the position of the clip in relation to the black spacer bar in place inbetween the liner and lock. If you nick that with the drill on the way in to drill the hole it isn't so much a big deal but if the tap gets in a bind on it when threading it can snap it in about the time it takes to hiccup and leave you a royal mess to get it out.

I would recommend trying to position the clip so that none of the holes have to hit that spacer bar if possible. If you can't do that with all three holes and one is in going to inevitably end up in the spacer material I would be very careful to drill that hole down far enough into the spacer bar on that one hole that does get into the spacer area just so it doesn't cause the tap to meet a dead end by bottoming out when threading the metal. I have managed to do this without going out the other side but if you go to far you'll at worst drill a tiny starter hole into the liner on the other side. No big deal so long as you don't go out the G10 on the opposite side of the knife.
