Hi all I am interested in getting an Emerson PUK and I was wondering if anyone who has handled the knife could tell me something about its handle material. Is it a rock-hard kind of polymer or it is one of those kind which has a soft, rubbery feel on it? Also does anyone have one with an after-market/custom kydex sheath and would kindly show me a pic or two of the sheath? I think I would love the blade but not really into its original nylon sheath. :D Thanks a lot!!

I have one with a black partially serrated blade. The handle is is quite hard; no flex or squish to mine at all.

The sheath might suprise you. It is a kydex sheath that is held inside the codura with a chicago screw set at the tip. I have been debating trying to rig the kydex iner sheath for IWB carry, but have to tried it yet.

Overall a nice little knife, although a bit smaller than I had expected it to be.

Hi Revolvergeek, thanks for the info. If that's the case with the handle then I think I am pretty much decided to get the blade. :) I like the handle with a more solid feel rather than the rubbery feel, after all. The original sheath looks pretty good to me but it is just that it looks too serious for EDC to my taste. I would save it for, let's say if I am gonna bring the knife when camping or any situations that gets me into the wilderness. :) Now I have to look for a nice kydex sheath for it. :)

I wanted one of these a while back, but I thought the handle was "squishy", and I don't do squishy. I thought the handle was supposed to be something like neoprene - kinda spongy or rubbery. Since the handle is more rigid than I thought, I think I may have to take a second look at this knife... If it came with an all kydex IWB sheath, I'd be sold already.

Likewise! Likewise! :)

Hey AntDog, I am expecting one coming in early this week. Let u know about it later. :D As for the sheath, you can always get one from On/Scene or Survival Sheath Systems.

EKI says "Injection Molded Polymer Handles with, "Give Grip" ergonomic surface".

I had one of these a couple years ago, liked the ergos overall. Indeed, the handle was grippy but firm, not soft and squishy like soft durometer Kraton.

The "Give Grip" gives a little, not a lot. But not a "rock hard" polymer like the CRKT Polkowski Kasper for e.g.

I had PUK in my car as a self defense piece and emergency prybar. Ultimately decided it was worth too much money for such infrequent use.

The CRKT Polkowski Kasper is made outta cheap steel, AUS-6, but it sure came sharp, and also has very secure ergos for a self defense knife to be used very infrequently. And it comes with a pretty cr@ppy cheap plastic "kydex-like" sheath. But heck, it's an el cheapo knife anyway. Good enough for what I carry it for... never used, but great ergos and utility if necessary.

If you plan to use the knife a good bit, the 154CM at Rc57-59 in the PUK will surely outperform AUS-6.

Too bad Polkowski doesn't seem to grind anything but ATS-34 and 440V. Some of his designs are really outstanding (in same vein as the PUK), and outta better steel would really shine if you use them a bunch (either 3V for toughness, or S30V for tough stainless). A premium over the PUK price though.

Les Robertson has a bunch of Polkowskis pictured... Al doesn't seem to have a web page:

My ideal specs of the PUK would be that it is made out of BG-42, full tang with slabs handle. Then again, this current one is not bad to me as well. Hahaha can't wait to have it arrived at the doorstep this week. :)

Yeah the Polkowskis' are a bit too expensive to my taste for a care-free, hard-use "equipment"....... now where's my PUK.....:D anticipation is always an enjoyment. Hahaha. :D

Cool! Let me know how you like it!:D

PUK.

So do you pronounce that "Puke"? Or "Puck"?

I'd like to see the PUK in S30V at Rc60... BG-42 is close.

Or CPM 3V at Rc60... tough.

I've been pronouncing it pee you kay. I don't think Emerson would like puke or puck!

Probably gonna have the blade tomorrow..... Its first assignment: T-bone steak. :D

Humm....seen a pic of PUK today with slab handles... where the pics I've seen from some other places seem to have injection molded handles with tapered tangs of the knives. So is it like a new-old models kind of thing??? Anyone know anything about that??

Good question. Here is one site showing the slab, screwed on handles...
http://store5.yimg.com/I/bestknives_1756_107326765
http://www.bestknives.com/empolutknif.html

However, their description is less than definitive:
Emerson Police Utility Knife is a tactical fixed blade with an overall length of 8 1/2". 154CM steel with Satin or Black Ti coated part serrated blade. Kevlar reinforced handles with a "no slip" design. Ballistic cloth sheath with Kydex insert.

Pics look like G-10, and look more like prototypes that Ernie would have made perhaps. And I thought G-10 was fiberglass (not Kevlar) reinforced, but I'm not certain about that either.

One would think the Emerson site would show the G-10 if it were available, but it doesn't. Didn't see under "Exclusive Design" or the "Special Editions" section.

You might also try the "Usual Suspects" network, ask those guys...they'll probably know:

... or call Emerson to get the scoop.

Ok!!! Finally it's arrived!

Really got some complex feelings toward the knife in the beginning... got the molded handle one. Since I've just discovered a pic of it with slab handles last nite, so for an instance it made me like the slabs handle version more... but then again...someone has posted here a while ago regarding different psychological stages toward the ownership of a knife, guess for the PUK I am in the "dislike-to-like" category. :)

The handle, its hard, but not "rock-hard". Yet it's not as soft as kraton, nor it will take any mark on it if u try to dig your fingernail in it. As posted before I am not a fan of rubbery feel handle materials and this one is good enough for me.

The blade, thought it was supposed to be a non-chisel edged blade but ended up it comes with a chisel ground. Not a big fan of it at all, especially when didn't expected to get it. Then again, this thing makes me won't like the blade that much and as a result.... I would use it more often to cut and use it with less care..... which I think is what a real knife should be and how it should work... a hard-user, so when u think about it, it could be a win-win situation in my case.

The sheath, as Emerson called it, yes it is a "system". U can basically take it apart to pieces... even the loop for the knife's handle is attached by Velcro, yet in no way it is not secure enough. then the front pouch, kydex insert...etc etc.. in conclusion a plesant surprise and I would actually prefer to use it than my new and coming concealex sheath when I am bringing the knife for camping/hiking.. etc, any situation when I am in the wilderness.

So IMHO, I would give this knife a 95 out of a hundred, which 5 being taken off for the chisel ground. Overally I like this knife and would recommend it. Just wish that they would have a version which has slabs handle, non chisel ground and BG-42 steel availble. If that model is actualized, for sure I am gonna be one of the owners of it.

The bottom-line is, it is a great blade and I recommend it, just to make sure that u get it at a price less than the MSRP. I got it for $120 and quite happy with it, but I surely won't be sold for it if I need to pay $200. And yes, get a custom sheath too. It's always good to know that the original sheath is around and ready and at the same time having a Concealeax one for a more 'civilized' and modern look. ;)

Still waiting for the concealeax sheath from Survival Sheath, think the blade and the new sheath would make a VERY beautiful couple. :D Let's wait till they meet and I will attach some of my new blade's pics here! :)

I believe these are V-ground with the edge bevel on one side. A true chisel grind is completely flat (vertical) on one side of the blade, and only ground on the other side.

See the Emerson site, call up either CQC-7B, and in lower right they show back side of a true chisel ground blade.

Yup. So it's not a true chisel then, but still...

Anyhow, not really hate that so much anyways. :)
