I received a catalog from Emerson awhile ago. Quite interesting models. But I've heard some rumors about bad QC - yeah, rumors should not be taken too seriously, but "there's no smoke without fire" as we say in Sweden, meaning there most likely is some substance to the rumors.

What's your opinion of the brand?

I carry one form of an Emerson knife everyday. I am now carrying a Raven as my off duty carry. When i am working I carry a SARK. In my opinion, Emerson is one of the finest production knives made. I reccomend them to anyone who is thinking about buying a good quality knife.

I love my emmerson commander.

Yeah you gotta take it apart every so often, clean it, oil it, and adjust it. But hell you gotta do that with your guns anyway. Truth be told I enjoy it.

If you want an emmerson, and you got the $$ for it, by all means order it this very instant! You'll be happy with it. I sure as hell am.

They are basically a one purpose knife. They are OK if you don't mind putting the knife together when you get it. I've had two and neither one impresses me. Why people rave about a knife that has to be fixed right out of the box is beyond me.

Emerson seems to evoke extreme reactions in a lot of people. I don't think I'm a partisan on either side. I own three Emersons, which I like, but they are not my favorite knives.

My take on Emerson is that they make tough and well-designed knives. They appear to have had some QC problems, although mine have all been fine. I have not heard any complaints about Emerson's customer service and they do seem willing to fix any problems that arise.

Also, the Wave is a genuine break-through. It works better than I would have believed without using it. I own two commanders primarily because of the Wave.

I have no real experience with the production models but i do collect the customs and i have had no problems with them. If you like them, then buy'em and use them.

As a DIE HARD Usual Suspect, I have to say...
I haven't heard anything in this thread I'd really argue.

Yes, there have been some issues with QC in the past, but I honestly think that they were made out to be much larger issues than they really were. I do know that many (if not all) of those issues have been resolved.

While no production company can guarantee they'll NEVER send out a bad knife, Emerson's customer service is unsurpassed. I recommend them HIGHLY.

The one prior comment I'll disagree with is Scott Dog's comment that they are a "one use" knife.

I use my Commmander for EVERYTHING and abuse the daylights out of it.
It keeps going strong, and aside from the wear of being my EDC for over two years, still looks great and performs better.

Buy one, you'll be glad you did.

imho most of the QC probs stem from the CQC7, if ya get a commander, no probs - go figure i guess the extra $$ on the commander makes a diff....anyway my CQC7 sucked, and my buds commander, is pretty good - no probs w/it - spend the $$ if ya want an emerson imho..........

Anyone want to bring up Mad Dog?

Seriously though, when a company goes to large scale production and has such a contreversial character in charge, problems are to be expected. When I am myself happy that the QC complaints are fixed and that silly things like the 98 Commanders being much better than the current Commanders, hey I will buy one.

I don't have an emerson, but I'd like to get one. I think that the amazing thing is that you CAN take it apart. Most companies don't like this and will call this abuse of the knife and void the warranty.

The only two companies that I know of that encourage you to take your knives apart to maintain them and totally stand behind the warrenty are Emerson and Strider.

Hats of to both companies for making products that are meant to be used.

All companie have occasional problems with their products - it is how they deal with them that sets them apart.

I have 7 Emerson production folders bought over a period of two years - none of them has had a problem. I can also state that Emerson is the only production knife that I still own - kitchen cutlery and my SAK excepted.

I am happy to be a member of the Usual Suspects on both the production and custom side of the house.

Ed

2 commanders, 1 socfk 1 psark and a waved 7 coming.

i also had a cqc7 and another socfk, but i sold those cause i needed cash fast.

No problems with any of them.

Hey General, how many Mad Dog Knives have you owned? None? That's what I thought. Except for someone using a ceramic blade as a shovel, what problems would you know about? None? That's what I thought.

Yeah, those rumors. You see, there's a conspiracy out there to destroy EKI, by spreading rumors about QC. Thanks god, there are a few good ppl who don't let this happen, with the grammar book in one hand and Commanders and CQs in the other :)

According to Emmerson fans - there were some QC problems in the past, but now they are all gone , so if you get a defective blade , must've been the old one, some relic I guess ,
or that's simply not true ;)

Of course, it would be very nice to know when was that "in the past", or at least when those problems were gone, this year, last year of before, so you could choose, but unfortunately there's no data so far. I'm not sure if we'll ever get something precise.

The only exception from this rule is Commander, my understanding is 98 productions are better than the later production. Unfortunatelly I got 2000 model :(

I agree with Scott, I don't really see a chisel blade ground on the left side as an utility blade, especially for the right handed.
Yes, you can use it for whatever you want, every day or every other day, but that doesn't mean it's equal or better.

You can take apart most of the folders I think?

And there are only a few companies will void the warranty for that. Benchmade has the policy, and I think REKAT at one time was going to do the same, not sure if they did, anyone else?

Besides if you are able to properly assemble your knife back, you will not have problems with companies listed above either.

I dont know about a conspiracy out to destroy emerson knives. Ive had 2 emerson knives, a commander and a cqc7. The cqc7 was fine, no problems, the commander was ****ed up. The blade was off centered, the screws came out, and the liner went all the way across the tang. You can draw your own conclusions from the replies people have posted here, but I would give serious thought before paying upwards of 200 dollars for a knife that would need to be immediately sent back to the factory.

FYI lifter4Him, I owned an SAS model for a little while. As I lived in Hereford for a little while the name alone made it an interesting buy. Bought it from a pal into customs in the UK. It was a decient enough knife, but not what I was expecting for the money so I sold it on to a local shop a while ago. Still I got it for a good price and the owner was happy to trade it with a little cash. In hindsight I was a little 'is this it then?' and the comments from Chas made me want to get rid ASAP. Otherwise I have nothing against the knives and in fact will probably buy another, but a different model this time. All I was doing was pointing out this (Emerson) and MDK are a good post to get into a flame war, which it appears you are trying to get me to join you in. Sorry I won't bite my friend!:) This is a good humoured thread and I won't make it otherwise.:p

Ok, actually, I was wrong
I thought it was you trying to get the flames going. I'm big enough to admit it. I just happen to like the McClung's and jumped the gun.
Mea culpa.
