Hey guys, Tink here. After finally picking up a high end production folder, the Southard, I've got a taste for another blade. However, there's a catch. Since I just dropped a load of cash on the Spydie, I'm in no huge hurry to spend another 200 dollars. I've always been a fan of Emerson's designs, such as the Horseman, the CQC8, and admittedly the CQC7, and I've been thinking about picking one of the three up. When I learned about the Kershaw/Emerson collaboration, I got excited. I could have one of the knives I want for under 50 bucks. Eventually I will get the real deal, after pawning off the Kershaw one to one of my non knifeknut buddies. The only thing I'm concerned is not liking the ergos, otherwise I would skip the Shaw and go straight to emerson. Is this a good idea, to get the Kershaw, use it for a while and determine if I like the ergonomics and blade styles etc, then sell it and pick up one of the real ones? Any input would be appreciated, thanks, Tink

Nothing ventured...
For me, it's the real deal.
Keep us posted and come on over to the Emerson Forum.

Yeah...you're probably right. I looked at them more and more and I've been thinking about that. A Horseman seems like it would be better in my pocket than other Kershaw Chinese crap. Oh well. Saving pennies in 3...2...1... thanks, Tink

I picked up the kershaw cqc-7 cause I was interested and it really is a great knife for such a cheap price point. I'm actually getting custom scales, thumb disk and backspacer for it, and all in all i'll have about ~$70 into the knife, about half what an emerson would run you. The fit and finish are great on it, the only thing I could give it a hit for is the steel choice, but what can you expect on a $35 knife.

Emerson ergos are tough to beat and his designs are just plain cool. I love my 8 but its a bit large for city carry (for me) so the MiniComm gets more pocket time. Horseman should be perfect and I'll pick one up one of these days.

I'd go for the real thing, but it's up to your budget to decide. I don't think the ergos will be an issue no matter what model of Emerson you decide on. People may criticize Emersons, but it's never for the ergos. Like Lycosa said, come down to the Emerson sub-forum and keep us updated.

If you want a CQC-7, the cheaper Kershaw will seem....cheap.

The last thing to worry about in an Emerson knife is the ergonomics.

Budget issues are serious things, but it might be better to go for the real thing--chances are you'll like the collab.--but not enough--and then want the real Emerson... and be out more money than intended. It all honesty, I stayed away from Emersons for a long time, and now they are the only "modern" folders I care to carry. I'd say save for the real deal. Here is some visual encouragement:

I've got the 6K and the 7K and I like my Kershaw/Emersons better than I liked my real Emersons that I sold.. At a quarter of the price.. Can't wait til the ZT/Emerson 620CF comes out..

I picked up a Kershaw CQC-6k and a 7k and I was actually pretty surprised by them. Not a fan of the blade steel but they're pretty solid for under $40 plus they have the wave opener. If you buy them knowing that they aren't going to be a real Emerson you won't be disappointed.

Question...are those blades flat on the other (clip) side?

I've got a Kershaw CQC-8K and an Emerson Mini CQC-8 (Horseman). If you're worried about ergos, don't be. They're great. :)
