how tough is it supposed to be? mine's shown a lot of wear after some light use (i cut up some carpet for my dog's dog house)

The finish is quite tough but it's a finish. Strip it to satin 154-CM. :)
Next time, use a carpet knife. :p

i figure i'll leave it as is. what's left of the finish can do what it's supposed to do.

carpet knife? i bought this to cut stuff with. #1 hard use knife right? it got the job done alright

You can see how much this knife has been carried by how scuffed up the clip is. (Frankly it should be bare, the clips hold up amazingly as well) Look at the finish. This knife has cut ALOT of material. You should be set. If you need to cut something cut it! No Emerson wants to be a safe queen, if so a dark curse shall fall over you:D

just depends on if scuffs and scratches on a knife bother ya or not i suppose, me, it bothers, so i dont cut just anything with my custom emerson CQC13, or my production CQC12, or my spyderco Ti ATR, i carry a spyderco SE delica for that, but hey if they dont bother ya, EKI's work ok as utility knives go for it.

it cracks me up when folks say scuffs/scratches give a knife "character". character? to me they just make it look like an old scuffed up knife lol.

i suppose i'm anal lol.
