Emerson Super Karambit, Liners both Titanium or Just the LOCK?

I tried to anodize the liners on my new Super Karambit yesterday and for some reason only the locking side would anodize, the other side would not. Could it be that only one side is Titanium? If this is true then this sucks.

Anyone know?

I can't answer why (I would be amazed if it wasn't cost), but I believe the replacement of one liner with steel is a recent revision. Which is to say, I remember hearing that certain years of certain models have dual Ti liners. Perhaps someone can confirm.

Edit:

To save themselves money while charging you higher prices:thumbup:.

Pretty much. I'm sure they would tell you that steel is good enough for the non-locking side, which is probably true, but their knife prices have gone up markedly. So if money is being saved it certainly isn't being saved by the consumer.

I would guess it would have to be a cost thing. But damn, for $300 bucks these things go for, I feel a little jipped. If there was another manufacture who made Karambit folders I would have probably gone with another brand. Don't get me wrong, I love my super karambit, its my EDC, but still.... $300 for something that probably cost $30 bucks to make.

How is it websites advertise "Ti liners" then? Very misleading...

The ONLY thing I can think of is the weight balance. The locking liner is significantly thicker than the other side. Having held both, I can almost say they both weigh about the same, maybe the steel side (thinner) weighing a little more. If that side was Ti, then it would definitely throw the balance off. The Chisel grind is also leaning towards the locking side as well, so I would guess its the balance. But then again, I'm sure you would have to be a professional knife martial artist to notice such things. Right?

Whatever makes you feel better about your purchase;).

Frankly for the money I would invest it in the Strider fixed blade Karambit.

Already own a Strider EBL-T fixed blade. Looked into getting the Karambit fixed blade, but opt for the emerson, easier to carry and living in CA we have shitty knife laws here. Carry a double edged Karambit won't go over so well :)

Double edges can be blunted by the user. It's the shape that would concern me, as even the folding emerson karambit looks like nothing but a weapon. If you're not vain about appearances, you could always get a Spyderco Superhawk and use a zip-tie to wave it open.

Yes this is true, a Karambit is not something you see people use everyday. I guess for the time being its the best in the market for a folder Karambit. Other liner not being Ti is not much of a big deal, was surprised yes. Disappointing? maybe for like 5 minutes.

Heres the karambit I was originally looking at.

Definitely do not want to blunt that back edge :)

FWIW:

Reese Weiland makes a Very nice Ti. Frame-lock Karambit. For a little more than an Emerson you can get a full custom, ask him and he will build one to your specs.

(he calls his K-bit design the Raven)
