Soon to be police officer here looking for a well made folder. Currently looking at the Emerson HD-7 Combo (10th Anniversary CQC-7) and the MOD Mark II. Any other suggestions? I'm looking for a tough knife that can take some serious abuse.... Just read a lot about the Emerson CQC-7 which is my top pick right now.

congratulations on the new job!!

i currently carry a cqc13 on duty. you cant really go wrong with any emerson.

ive handled a couple mod's and dont care for the ergonomics. they appear to be of good quality though.

strider makes a very tough folder. for the budget minded consider a spyderco w/wave.

I agree with morimotom the mod knives look and feel a little flea marketish, but are built with quality.

hd-7 is an amazing blade. other emerson models i suggest are the commander and the cqc15. the commander for its amazing cutting ability and the 15 for being the best of the commanders cutting ability and the pointy strength of the cqc7

Best thing to do is to find a knife store and try and handle a couple of them.
If you are going to be relying on this blade you better make sure it feels good in your hand any way you hold it.

On another note, if you purchase an emerson and you dont like it you can easily sell or trade it here on the forums again.

Emerson m-wave. Designed by SWAT operator and gunsmith, Hilton Yam.

Or waved Endura. cheap, has the wave and strong also (it has ss liners I believe). Better steel on it (VG10). The quality of Spyderco, the innovativeness of Emerson. BEst of both worlds.

Or Strider SNG/SMF. It is really very tough (one of the toughest). Call them and ask for LEO discount. Might cost you 2 Emersons but worth it.

maybe look at the cqc8..... if its too big , stick with the 7. ya wont be disapointed with either . personally i like a large folder and on duty i carry the cqc8 .

I haven't ever handled an emerson, though I'd like to own several, and will eventually when money isn't so tight, I've got a MOD CQD Mark II. I really like the ergo's of the MarkII, but if I had to do it over again, I'd get an EKI. I've used my MOD for some really hard use stuff, and it performed well, but I can't get it sharp again no matter what I do, and some vertical blade play has developed. It now sits in a drawer. I can't open it up myself, because that voids the warranty. I'd definitely got with an EKI, and my next knife will be one for sure.

I carry both an EKI or MOD depending. Personally speaking the MOD's are a better manufactured knife than the EKI line. Take them both apart and you will see what I mean. Not to disaparage EKI in any way. EKI uses and open build design with teflon washers and a narrow or thin liner lock for the most part. Sometimes you will luck out and get one with the thicker liner lock.

MOD's are truly precision made knives along the same vein as a MT. Some of the people that worked at MT started the MOD line of knives. The integral liner lock on the MOD's are much thicker, the pivot point is actually a bearing that rides in the middle of the blade pivot hole. It then has thrust washer used for blade tightness. I currently own a Trident, Hornet, CQD II, and the button lock 875 pe. All of them are razor sharp and very very excellant build quality. I don't know anything flea marketish about any of them. I also own a CQDII and don't like it as much as the others MOD's I have. Great design idea but the blade is way to thick to get it anywhere near reasonably sharp.

As for EKI's I am partial to the Commanders and the SOFCK line. I carried a CQC7a and b model for years too so it isn't like I don't know what I am talking about when speaking of Emersons. Just picked up 3 SOFCK's over the past couple of weeks and they are truly fine knives. They are simple to take apart which MOD's aren't really that simple but it can be done. The pivot always gives me problems on the MOD's. The current Commander I have kept has the very thick liner lock which is nice. And I'll tell ya that thing is 3 years old and has been waved and just plain opened thousands of times and the lock settled in one time and really hasn't move at all. The blade coating has taken a beating though. I can also get it pretty darn sharp on a par with the MOD's or close to it. You'll also hear it be said that EKI's are made to do one thing well and that is cut flesh. I have always had a problem with that line of thinking. Just because of the chisel grind used. Everyone thinks that if it has the chisel grind it will be easier to cut flesh with. Don't belive it for a minute. If a knife is sharp as it can be it will have no problem cutting through what needs to be cut and the sharper it is the easier it will be to do no matter what the grind on the blade. Now the tanto may make it seem easier where the point and main blade junction meet. All that is really doing is giving a focus point to the force exerted. I get the same cutting performance from a standard blade as I do my tanto SOFCK. Reason being is that they are both as sharp as I can get them.

I like both manufacture'rs. I like the older designed MOD's over the newer designed too. The 875 I have is extremely stout, to the point as to where I wouldn't be afraid to hit the top of the spine with a hammer to cut through something if I had too. I feel the same way about the Commander I have too. Just a stout knife with that liner lock it inspires confidence. Either way you go I don't think you will regret either purchase. keepem sharp

I'll give another vote for the CQC-8 but IMO its more of a SD knife, for utility i would use the commander.

what makes emersons soo great is it the steel?? handle, the feel or look

i would say the design, i like EKI's because i like the way the handles feel and the way they carry so imho it would be the innovative designs.

I'm not an expert by any means, so here is a non-expert view. I have an MOD mark II auto and an emerson mini commander. I usually don't use my knives as tools except on rare occasions. They are pretty much strictly carried for self defense. As far as the MOD goes, it is built like a tank. I really like the way it feels in MY hand and I also like the idea of the glass break on the end of it. As far as the emerson, it grips well, is very sharp (if i need it sharpened, i will send it to emerson), and just the right size for me. But to me, the wave is where it is at. Deploying the MOD, even though it is an auto is nowhere near as easy or fast as the wave feature. If I were in a situation where I had plenty of time to deploy the knife before an attack, I would want the MOD. But, as we all know, you usually don't have alot of heads up of a pending assault. Therefore, I will always carry the emerson before the MOD. Just my nonexpert thoughts.

uh....oh i got that feeling of impending doom again . therefore i will always carry my cqc8.;)

I got a mark 1 3 years ago and it took 2 1/2 years to find someone to buy it. It was too big and I just flat out didnt like it. I have a commander and I LOVE it. Just picked up a rapid deployment sheath for my duty belt and Im picking up a 7 in 2 weeks. Id go with the emerson.

This is the "Emerson area" so im not supprised you were recommended one Emerson or another
I have to agree though, you will not regret getting one and it should serve you well for a good length of time. there nice and easy to keep sharp and the wave is defo. a bonus. ;)

I was a Police officer for 13 years until I had to retire early from Cancer.
I collect Emersons and have a lot of them, but as far as police work goes you have to go with the MOD MarkII or Even Better his big brother the MarkV.
The mMark V has a seat belt cutter and a window punch that comes inhandy plus you can get a automatic. It's a little big but well worth the extra size and money for what you can do with it.I carried my right on my Duty Belt.I bought a pager holde from Could & Goodrich and the belt clip fits perfect onto the pager opening.

Check it out.
