I just recieved my Emerson Mini CQC7 and it appears to be new, however, the blade is rubbing against the liner on the non-edge side. I have played with the pivot trying to center it more, but the rubbing is bugging me. If I loosen it too much then I get blade play. The questions is two fold. Is this normal for new Emerson's? And, I got this in trade, is the warranty still in effect since I don't have documentation?

no its not normal and yes i am sure if ya send it in they would take care of the problem,

I had the exact same issue. Strip the pivot down, pull the washers & blade out, spray it all out with some WD-40 or Rem Oil (you'll get black gunk out), reassemble and USE it. After about 3 days it started to "settle" and after a week the blade was completely centered and everything was right in the world.

My mini 7 was the first time I've seen this with Emersons. They all take some breaking in but this was the first time I'd seen it so close to the liner. I think it has to do with the top detent being very stiff.

Usually on the ones I've seen this occurs when the rear spacer is just a bit too thin compared to the thickness of the blade with both washers on it. For example if the blade and both washers measure out to be .190 and the rear spacer is .182 it can be just enough to cause the blade to rub the liner when closing it. Ideal calls for the spacer in the rear to be the same as that pivot measurement. So if the washers and blade both measure .190 its okay to have a rear spacer at .188 or .193 but once you get under or over that you seem to run into some issues one way or the other both for function when really off and for looks as well if the liners are tweaked outwardly to where you can see the bend in the liners with the naked eye. On my 98 Specwar which had this same problem the rear spacer was .175 while the pivot (blade thickness and both washers together) was .192 so when the blade closed the tip flat side of the chisel ground blade nicked the liner going in and coming out. Once I made a new .193 black G10 spacer for the rear the problem was solved.

I still have this Specwar and the original spacer that was too thin and I have since bought another 98 Specwar just like it and a 99. Both of those had spacers that were in the correct thickness. Sometimes a batch of blades comes out thicker steel than old stock. At other times the sheets of G10 or whatever is used for spacers can be off. It happens. Its usually an easy fix by replacing the spacer in the rear with a better fitting one.
