Do I have this right? The knives with the wave are carried tip-up in the pocket, and when pulled from the pocket, the wave hooks the pocket edge and pulls the blade open. Will this fully open the blade if pulled hard enough or at the right angle? Also, with jeans I would assume this is no problem, but what about lighter fabric pants pockets? Couldn't this rip your pocket seams open, or tear your pants?
Also, where to get one? I haven't seen too many sites listing the Emersons (not the "hardwear" series). Looking specifically for a mini CQC7 tanto, plain edge, black blade.

Yes.

Yes, it doesn't take much force, just the right motion.

Yes, it will eat pants after a while. The more delicate the pants, the faster the wear.

Yes, that is how the wave works, and it does open the blade fully.

I understand that it can damage lighter pants. When used properly it generates a lot of force.

You may also wish to consider getting another Tip-up knife with an opening hole and simply modifying the hole to function as a wave. It is remarkable easy to do, and functions just as well as the Emerson device. This would likely result in a superior knife for less expense.

BTW, I'm not sure the Mini CQC7 is made in a waved version but I certainly could be wrong. I know the full sized CQC7 is made with a wave.

One Stop Knife Shop carries Emersons. You can also buy them second-hand on the sale forums.

You understand the operation of the Wave fine. Once hooked, the knife will snap open without you thinking about it. When I first got my Commander, I found it would "Wave" open even if I meant to pull it out without opening the blade. If the Wave is placed firmly against the edge of a pocket and the knife pulled out smoothly, you won't have serious problems tearing the cloth.

Of course, when you first get one, you'll play with it till it wears something out, so practice with an old pair of pants on. :) TAD Gear actually sells pants with a reinforced pocket edge to guard against clip wear; these should hold up to the Wave, too! :D

Whoa! Don't everyone answer all at once now !!! (You really picked a popular question :) )

The mini cqc7 is not available in a waved version. The regular cqc7 is the smalles of the waved knives offered. I find the wave works better with some pants than others, but have never torn pants using it. You really don't have to pull it out very hard to open it as long as your pivot isn't too tight, pulling faster just makes it snap open harder.

the wave is a great idea . I dont have a emerson wave but i did make a cheap kabar into a wave knife. It is very simple. The one I made has torn my pants but I think I could make it more rounded to make it better. Thet also make a sheath for the waves ! Looks like that be the way to go if you dont wanna ruin your pants !

That's really interesting! Is this a pocket sheath? Anyone have a pic or link?
Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm trying to add knives of different styles or with different features to my collection. Though I have a BM/Emerson QCQ7, I don't have a waved knife. It seems this would be a fast-opening option. I currently carry my Buck/Mayo everywhere and love it! Only complaint is that it's a little slow into action (I personally find tip-down carry much slower than tip-up. Maybe I'm not well versed in some technique, and I don't want to start another tip up vs. tip down argument here. I'll just have to search and read up when I get a chance.)

Not sure if they make the sheath for the model that you want . I guess you will have to look into that part !

I have a Benchmade 732. I like the knife alot and am pretty fast on the opening but i am very impressed with the waved function. Is it possible to change this into waved or send it off to a custom place that will do this. Thanks

I've Waved probably a half dozen of the CQC7 knives including the mini with great results. The fact of the matter is these are easier to carry and use normally. You can still pull them out Wave like when you want to. In other words they don't catch when you don't want them to quite as much.

Owning the Waved knife is a dicipline thing. Just because you have one doesn't mean you have to use it all the time each and everytime you need your knife.

It can and will tear up pant pockets in a hurry. You just have to use it when you need it to spare your pants. I've found that the Atlantic Salt and the Para Military I Waved as well as the BenchMade 420 Resistor are the easiest on pockets that I own. I've had a couple of Commanders into my shop for low ride pocket clips that also worked this smoothly but the SARK, and a few others seemed to be a bit tight and gritty by comparison to the Commanders I've seen. It probably is personal pref as to pivot pin tightness and since they were not mine I didn't mess with that on them.

On the question of the 732 being Waved: I don't think that one is a candidate for it. I always lay the knife flat on the table closed and draw a line from the two high points on each end of the knife (see picture) and then if the Wave can sit higher than both of these points it will work well. If not it is hit and miss and it may not work much at all. The 732 is a real tough call. If you were to reprofile the entire blade bringing the whole thing down it might catch and open but the blade would probably look pretty darn weird when you were done Waving it.

the waved mini cqc7b is still listed on the emerson site.
i own one from 2004.

http://www.emersonknives.com/MiniCQC7BW.html

http://www.newgraham.com carries emersons as well
but most websites are out of most emersons,
as the production runs are small and infrequent.

i was lucky to find a mini commander bts this weekend at my local sporting goods shop.
they wanted $200 for it. then i found out they pricematch websites. :)
i find emerson knives to be sharp, tough, dependable, and highly ergonomic.
the wave feature is just icing on the cake to me.

Akan529,

There are a few fellows who have found ways to "wave" knives that have thumbstuds. PM and I can give you some contact info for one of them.

Hey blade man,
I sent you an email. I just really like the wave feature but like someone said above the 732 might be too thin to do a custom waved job. But email me back with any info. Thanks
