Im looking to get wavd knife and was wondering if I should just get the spyderco or if the Emersn is worth the extra price

they are very different knives.

however, the wave on the spyderco is larger and not as hard on clothing, at least on the endura. the pkal "wave" looks like it would tear up pants pretty well.

Emerson and Spyderco's waves work fine, but you can open your beer with the Spyderco wave.
P'kal doesn't chew the pocket up too badly, and it's removable.

Yes. The Spyderco is somewhat different but still has the Emerson patent number stamped on the knife. It would come down to yuor preference in knife style and what your intended use is going to be.

I have several Emerson waved folders and one Spyderco waved Delica that I carry every day in my back pocket.

The p'kal is intended to be carried wedged up into the side of the pocket nearest your crotch, as was demonstrated for me by SouthNarc. It really isn't any harder on your pants than any other Wave device; it's just a cylinder.

I've found the emerson waves to be inconsistent. Sometimes they catch on my pocket, sometime they don't. The waved Spydies catch every time.

emerson knives seem way overpriced inmop

you can get a spyderco endura that will cost 1/3 the price of an emerson and be just as reliable, if not better.

yea and on a spyderco you get a lockback for life instead of a thin, titanium liner that'll wear out in less than a year.

The knives are much different, but if you're looking at the waves particularly: I think the Spyderco implementation is the best.

Glad I'am not the only one that has that problem.

If you go to a store where you can try the knives out, you can pick an Emerson where the liner has plenty of room to wear in.
Liner locks are a case where it is VERY useful to have the chance to play before you buy.
Lock-backs are cool though.:)

in all fairness to emerson:

i've sent my mini-commander back to emerson *twice* for linerlock play and BOTH times the knife came back to me with a brand new liner. so customer service is a plus.

but mailing the knife is a pain in the ass.

Only Wave that knife when necessary. Then your pants and the liner-lock will last a long time! :)

I have not had any problems with my emerson liner lock and I have had my knife over a year. I found that when using any knife with a wave feature you do not need to yank it out of your pocket really hard. It is all in the technique, once I had that down, I stopped ripping pants pockets. Both are good knives, but are in different classes in my opinion. The spydeco endura and delica are great knives for the money and the wave feature works great. I think that it is a little easier to do than the emerson. My endura has a little bit more blade play than I would like, but for the money it si a great knife. On the plus side the spyderco clip can be placed for left or right handed carry, but the emerson is only for the right side unless you buy a left hand model. The emerson is a tougher knife, and just feels more substantial. There is no blade play in my CQC-15. Like I said once I learned how to deploy the knife it opens every time.

Both types of waves work good for me but I'd give a slight nod to the Spyderco style. Personally, I much perfer any Emerson knife over any type of Endura though -mainly due to egomonics and overall solid feel. You can find mini 7s and mini Commanders for $100 or slightly more which isn't too bad. Emerson customer service is "the best" I've ever experienced, and they have very, very fast turn around time. The waved Endura is a good knife though, especially if cost is an significant issue to you.

I have a couple of waved Emersons and they don't work well
unless you make a conscious effort to pull the knife back as
it clears your pocket. I know it may be blasphemous(sp?) but
the best "wave" I've ever used is on the Cold Steel AK47. I believe it works so well because the thumbstud(wave) is flared and is very forgiving to a sloppy draw out of the pocket. Try one, you won't believe how well it works.

the wave on the ti-lite is great also ittl wear on the pocket over time but that thing realls SNAPS

cheers!

A plus with the Emerson wave is it's easier to take out of the pocket withOUT engaging the wave.
Useful, since you don't always want the knife to wave open.
Also easier to deploy when sitting, since the wave opening can be avoided.
