This is a request for a review/comparison.

These two neck knives seem very similar in size, weight, and ergos. Emerson is made from 154 CM while Spyderco is AUS 6m which is a big difference.

The difference in price is very substantial. Has anyone had experience with both of these and if so, can you advise whether you feel the price difference is justified?

Thanks!

Jim

I have both knives and prefer the SPOT. I feel it has better ergos and is just a better design over-all.

I have a SPOT with micarta covered handles in VG-10. An excellent little blade, and I opted for it instead of the LaGriffe due to the design as well as liking VG-10 better than 154cm.

I own both. Both are excellent designs and well-executed. However, I much prefer the SPOT. The SPOT's grip is both more comfortable and more secure. The SPOT's recurved blade shape, while odd, is more versatile than the La Griffe's hawkbill and has proven very effective.

I own SPOTs in both AUS-6 and VG-10. The AUS-6 version does not hold an edge as well as the La Griffe's 154CM, but it isn't bad, just not as good. I can live with that.

None of this is intended as a slam on the La Griffe. That design broke new ground and is still a great knife. I view the SPOT as a second-generation evolution of the concept.

I own a Lagriffe and had a micarta/vg10 spot during a pass around. I much prefer the lagriffe, I feel its one of the best small SD knife/sheath packages available. Now when I got mine they were running between 50 and 60 dollars and I undersand they are selling for more now, I don't know how much. I love the feel of the lagriffe, find it very fast to deploy in a strong grip and mine is razor sharp and is easy to maintain that way. I also feel the sheath is excellent, very simple and minimalist with great retention and offering a variety of good carry options.
It isn't a brand thing for me either, I carry almost exclusively Spyderco folders and have gotten rid of all my Emerson knives except for the lagriffe, which isn't going anywhere.

Try and get your hands on both of them. With small oddly shaped handles you really need to actually get it in your hand to make a confident decision.
Either one will be a great knife for you.

I prefer the La Griffe too - except for the chisel grind - but ergos wise I hated the Spot the moment it was in my hands which just goes to show ergos are highly subjective.

FYI, Spyderco pays royalties to Fred Perrin for any knives that we make with the "Perrin index finger hole".

I have a S.P.O.T. and i love it! i had it cord wrapped and now i carry it almost full time. I can't wait till the swick will be available!

I don't know about custom collaborate process. But can custom maker authorize a same design to another maker (simultaneously or to replace the current one)? I love lagriffe's simple design, but I am sick of emerson's chisel grind, 154cm, and higher price point compared with spyderco. And emerson just won't adopt suggestions from fans and make changes (and keep claiming that it's good enough). I wish spyderco one day can make its own lagriffe. I am sure it will be a much refined knife than the current emerson version.

The SPOT is a great knife. Good job Sal!(p.s. I only buy the american made Spydies, you guys rock!)
