Emerson's copper impregnated grease

Commercially available, yet still keeping it a secret?

OK then.

Try Glock grease if you want something close (likely identical) to factory fresh.

Or, since a folding knife is just a hinge, and an Emerson already has self lubricating washers, don't lube it at all unless the hinge stops working.

Even the Emerson site just says rinse it out.

I personally like 3 in 1 oil if feel like smoothing the action a bit. Grease won't give that benefit tho. Actually makes it stickier.

I wonder why they use grease in the first place anyway?

I find the copper grease gums up after a while and feels gritty. Loctite Copper anti-seize is basically the same stuff.

As an alternative, try White Lithium Grease, same stuff I use for my guns. Available at any auto parts store. Lithium grease never seems to need a reapplication on a pivot. I'll reapply only if the knife is apart for whatever reason.

CRK flourinated grease is similar, it just has a higher temperature resistance in case you like to bake your knives in the oven.

One of the great beauties of Emerson washer knives is the elegant simplicity, which in the case of lubricants, allows for many options as Yester5 noted. I've used, very sparingly, John Deere urea grease ($5/14oz. !!!), Corrosion Block aerosol and grease, CorrosionX aerosol, Loctite anti-seize and even Mobil1 10W-30. Can't tell much of a difference between any of them and the original Emerson stuff.

I'm just glad they don't require some ultra-rare Unicorn semen to get it done.
