I have backpacked in the Emigrant Wilderness as well as the northern boundary areas of Yosemite (Bond Pass, Jack Main Canyon, Tilden Lake, etc.) a number of times, although not recently. I have always entered from Kennedy Meadows, taken the trail past Relief Reservoir, Sheep Camp, etc. into the wilderness. Its kind of a 'dry hike " up that trail, but its not bad. The area is a little different in that region of the Sierras since its a mix of Volcanic and Granite mountains and quite beautiful. As far as the Sierras go the hiking is generally not as steep as in the more southern parts of the range on the Eastern side and the trails are in good shape. In addition the elevations are not as high either, I believe the higher peaks may only reach 10,000 - 11,000 versus 12,000 - 14,000 in the southern "High Sierras". I have found this area to have less people and the camping is excellent. You can also arrange a number of nice loop trips and easily spend a week in the area exploring, etc. There are a lot lakes, from small (Mosquito Lake) to quite large (Huckleberry Lake) and the fishing in many of the lakes is excellent, particularly Middle Emigrant Lake. there are lots of big fish in there!
Hope that helps!
