something anybody who went to the philippines knows, and those people who studied martial arts in the philippines knows this too, that all the "empty handed arnis/eskrima/kali" that we see today is not all that "original" or authentic.

empty hand martial arts to a so called "pure style" FMA, is just that, empty hand. the hand is not a knife, you cannot chop a guys arm and think that is going to do enough damage like a weapon. the old men who do the empty handed style, punch they kick, they lock and throw and choke, just like any other style. yes "defenging the snake" is popular to them, but it is not the foundation of everything we do.

what we see as "empty handed arnis" today is, people trying to fit into what everybody wants in the philippine martial arts. lets see, we do the sinawali, so lets drop the sticks and do it empty handed, it MUST work...yeah right. sure we have some movements that are similar, but not like you see it today. what i see today is wing chun, jujistu and aikido, and "empty handed arnis" disguised as original philippine empty hands arts. people want it, and if you show them what the old men are doing, then they will say that is not real philippine style. so you have to add drills, and empty handed disarming, and lots of defensive patty cake answers to weapon attacks or wing chin style punching. this might be philippine fighting arts emtpy handed, but it is not the art i grew up with. and it is not the art the old men you read about grew up with.

if you want to know what PHILIPPINE philippine martial arts looks like, look at kenpo, because that is what many of there styles looks like. the strike and hit and poke. they rake the fingers, they smack the elbows and hit the throat, because the hand is a hand, not a stick or a knife. or you could just go to the philippines and find a small "nobody" teacher (or find one here) and see there style. and dont ask to show me this show me that, just sign up or ask to be taught and stay long enough, you will. but ask for "kinomutai" and if your money is green, they will give it to you.

i have more to say, but i will write back and post later.
