hey guys, im trainig to be an EMT (emergency medical transport) and decided i needed a few things before going into the field. im gonna need a good, but compact flashligt, a safety cutter, and of course, a knife
i have about a 50 dollar budget for each item
any suggestions will be helpful

$50 for all or just the knife?

If it's for all, I suggest a Spyderco Tenacious generic safety cutter and Maglite Minimag LED.

For about $10 more I would upgrade to a Fenix E21.

Trauma shears are a necessity. I still have a pair I bought in 98'.
Benchmade Houdini tool is a good choice too.

For a good compact flashlight, I've been very happy with my Fenix LD10 - they go for 50$, give or take a couple bucks. For 'safety cutters', are you looking for a seatbelt cutter/rescue hook type of thing? If so, Benchmade has a few different ones in the $20-$50 range.

well benchmades safety cutter is standard issue from what i hear and can be had for $20ish. not sure about flashlights. however $50 is not alot for a knife that will be saving peoples lives imho maybe a used delica, endura

Ambulance companies in my area do not issue much, what might be issued in one area might not be in all others. Most of it is junk from tradeshows. Most of my friends are EMT/Paramedic/Fire fighters that I used to work with, they all buy their own gear.

i understand it's alot to ask for such a small amount of money, but i just don't have the cash right now. mabey i can go about 70-80 i guess

You can get a new Delica for $50.15. I've carried one version off and on for years and they're great knives. I really think you should look at the Leatherman Wave if you don't have a good multitool. I've used either that or a Charge for several years in Search And Rescue and have found it to be very handy.

What kind of knife are you wanting?

IIRC the Becker BK3 "TacTool" was made with EMT first responders in mind, but it is not anything like for instance, a delica, and I would not want to use it like I would a delica as it is a very different kind of beast.

Here is a review of one. The local firefighters used only the BK3 to dismantle a Dodge.

Good luck

You'll need a multi-tool. A LM Wave is a good choice as is a Vic Spirit.

For trauma shears get a couple of the cheap colorful handled ones to start with. They only cost a few bucks.

Lots of flashlight choices out there. Fenix is good as is 4sevens. Currently I'm using a Peak LED which I like a lot. If you're going to be on an ambulance get on with a multiple outputs. The low output is nice when your doing paperwork in the dark. Nothing more annoying than a super bright flashlight shining off off a white piece of paper.

I also just became an EMT, and am about to enroll into Paramedic school. The loadout I use during rotations was this:

Loadout.jpg

It consists of a pair of trauma shears with RipShears; A Surefire E2D LED Flashlight; A Streamlight Stylus Pen Light; A Victorinox Rescue Tool; Hemostats; Long Tweezers; and a Window Punch;
All contained in a Nite-Ize Pock-Its pouch. Of course I keep my stethoscope with some medical tape around my neck.
