You maybe mean a milling machine? It does use end mills.

No problem Tim, welcome to the Forum, this is a good source of information.
The internet is like a minefield when you start out, as is knifemaking but I think this forum will help you a lot. There are some very patient, knowledgable, helpful people here. Dunno about the internet tho. Cyberspace can be a scary place.
If you are serious about making knives a milling machine will be VERY useful, actually, it is useful for many things.:thumbup:
Good luck and remember, nothing is simple so be prepared to hang in there and face a LOT of adversity but do not give up, the satisfaction of seeing the work of your own hands is worth it.
Oh, one last thing, you might want to give a bit more info about yourself, people are more prepared to help a guy that is more open, nothing nasty intended. You will probably find that some guy lives close to you and may even want to come over and help you, or use your milling machine!!

A milling machine can be very useful but a surface grinder is a must if you plan on making folders. If the milling machine is well priced I wouldn't pass it up. On the other hand you can get a decent surface grinder for under 1K if you are patient and check ebay regularly. There are some that will disagree with me. In the end you will have to make the call.

I have to agree with Mr. Washburn. If it to good to pass up, dont. A surface grinder is a must for folders and i couldnt live without mine for fixed blades either. You can get a pretty good fit if you surface grind the bolsters before installing them.
