Well, I don't know if its hit me quite yet. Still kind of in shock I guess. I sold my Pinzgauer Military truck and got word today that its official. The new owner is flying in on Saturday to drive it home. For those that don't know what a Pinzgauer is it is that small picture by my screen name that has been my avatar for quite a while so I guess I'll be changing that to something new here this Saturday. Probably my old 55 International Pickup truck I've restored completely.

I've had my Pinz so long that it has been like part of the family but the wife finally got to me and it had to go after I bought my new grinder and some other equipment, knives, and of course other big things too numerous and/or embarasing to mention that all came up this year for my shop and other things. It was the only way to keep the peace.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share that. Its one of those moments where the wife is on the phone celebrating with all her family and friends and I don't know whether to join in or cry.

I know how it is to give up the old and faithful car away. We had the same volvo for about 20 years. It was a faithful and good car, and as old as I was!

Yeah. This one is going to be hard to watch drive off I think.

Tom being the outdoorsman and hunter you are I'm sure this thing would be right up your alley. No better deer buggy than one of these babies. (or maybe I should say "hog buggy" in your case :D)

I am going to have to look those up I guess.

I've grown used to so many things about the versatility of one of these Pinzgauers that I guess a replacement will be a hard bill to fill. Its like driving a VW Bus on steroids but they are also campers, convertibles, SUVs, pick up trucks, heavy haulers being a true metric ton (2200 lb) payload and fairly reliable for something that has to be 25 years old to get tagged legally in the US.

When I traveled in it I was always pleased with the economy of it but I own gas hogs which made it my most economical vehicle. When I needed a rest from travel I had it built in and could make a stop any ole place I pointed it just about. I mean its a tent on wheels since a double or queen size mattress and all your gear rides in back nicely. I slept out in it many times by a stream or waterfall under the stars. Its those times when I'll really go through the withdrawls I guess.

I drove a '69 El Camino for over ten years; she was practically a part of my identity. Towards the end, so much was going wrong with her, she was driving me crazy. I cursed her regularly, and sold her for a song.

Now, whenever I see one, which isn't often, I get all nostalgic and wistful.

You'll get over it, Steve. It's all rust in the end.

I have always wanted one of those. Looks like such a perfect offroader. (Don't know how practical it would be here in L.A. though!) But I know the feeling, I got rid of my Jeep a year and a half ago and I still miss that thing.

On forums it is easy to associate people with their avatar, I always thought of STR as a simple looking, rugged off-road vehicle. It will be a new change for everyone here.

Sorry to hear of it, it's a very cool truck. Let's hope her new owner treats her well!

No its pretty decent and solid at the moment. The one I have is an X-Swiss army truck which means that its in great shape. With the Swiss being a neutral country you know in advance its not been in war or over in Iraq collecting grit. The Swiss ones are the cleanest usually. I understand they keep them in climate controlled underground facilities when not in use too so most all of the ones that end up here are pretty nice with low miles. Mine didn't know what rust was until it got to the states. Then I had some touch ups every now and then to prevent spreading.

You guys that want one keep in mind that when you see fuses on the dash instead of breakers that it means it ain't an X- Swiss truck. All the Swiss ones have breakers that you simply push back in when they trip.

I can not believe you sold that.

You must REALLY love your wife. ;)

Yeah I'm whipped! :)

Today is the day. Been cleaning it up and getting it ready for the trip for him the last few days. I pick him up at the airport later on today.

Well its official. My Pinz is gone so I'm off to recovery for a bit. :(

STR,

Sad to see it go. My wife and I have been wondering about these for a while now. Was this something you had to work on every time you took it out or was it pretty reliable once you got things fixed up?

I also wondered; what was the top cruising speed on the road?

Thanks,
