End of Summer

On no, say it ain't so !

Cool beach pics......where did you go. Was this a N. Carolina beach ?

Awesome. I don't get the tree out on the beach?

A result of severe beach erosion on a barrier island. All of the Outer Banks along the Carolina coast, as well as north and very much southward, have barrier islands and coastlines that shift and change over time. This is Botany Bay on the South Carolina coast. The erosion has killed the trees that are exposed to the salt water and tides right up to the high tide mark. The dunes and vegetation are very much alive right at that and past that mark. We visited at low tide, but at high tide these is basically no beach to speak of - the water extends right up to the vegetation line. All these dead trees are deep in the water. It's essentially a skeleton beach.

Very cool to see it though. Thanks for the reply. Btw great looking Osage FB.

Thank you. I very much love the osage.

The shifting nature of these islands and inlets has played a relatively important role in the history of the region. Major storms and the natural flow of the ocean and these waters act on these thin barrier islands on a time and scale that is beautiful and natural - but tends to be at odds with coastal development, housing, etc. along these areas.

Explorers like Verrazano and others at various times thought they had found a route through the fabled "Inland Sea" as they stumbled across inlets into the bays and sounds behind these islands, only to discover that these waterway passages would vanish or become impossible to navigate upon their return. The infamous Blackbeard was intimately familiar with these routes, and used them to his distinct advantage when hiding from or battling with the British and Colonial authorities. He was a master at not only hiding along the Outer Banks, but also in maneuvering through shallow waters that would leave his opponents run-aground, permitting him obvious advantage in either fight or flight.

They are a magnificent place to explore.

Those trees are haunting. Looks like a great way to finish the summer. School starteda few weeks ago for us.

Very nice photos Tony. The food looks fantastic.

Summer is going to be starting for us in a few weeks and I'm looking forward to that.

I enjoyed all the pics, but I really like the shot of your EDK and coffee! It's been a long time since I contributed to the nature pic thread, your pics inspire me to go back through my photos in the last year+ and share!

Beautiful shots! Looks like a great time. Thanks for sharing the interesting history too!

 Thanks for sharing the history and wonderful pics Tony. Looks like you had a great time with your son. Love that Osage Karda!

Thanks guys. I can't help myself with the history part. It's what happens naturally after years of teaching the subject. My sons roll their eyes...

But my students loved Pirate Days! We would all dress in costume and have a massive naval battle with foam swords out on the football field. I was always the British Navy. Pandemonium. Administration never quite saw the educational value in it, but we sure had some fun!

Looks like an awesome trip, and the food looks fantastic! I had to google Edisto Beach State Park. The "hiking and camping with an ocean view" description is very inviting. It's only a 7 hour drive. I will have to check it out one day.

Great pics Tony. Thanks for sharing! We're missing a pic of the author though :-)

OMG, I hope this doesn't become a prerequisite of the "pics-or-it-didn't-happen" philosophy of BF  . I'd much rather people enjoyed my posts than waste time wondering what some over-weight, gray-headed old man is doing wandering the woods with a camera :D

Heck no, not a prerequisite. Just gotta give Tony a bit of a hard time.
