Well.......the world ends on Friday :D  ;)

And with that thought, I figured what the hell. We get gun threads pretty regularly here (Glock bashing  ), and one thing crossed my mind, no one ever seems to mention reloading.

So with the world going down the toilet in a few days, and with more and more people getting into reloading just because the cost of ammo and it's something to do in the winter, how many shooters do we have here that reload?

If you do what do you reload? What press/presses do you have? Favorite loads? Etc.

Just random thoughts, besides, if I run out of certain powders I need to know what people has had luck with so I know how to improvise :D

Only 300 Blackout at the moment, and still experimenting..................................

I reload .40, .45, 30-06, 7mm, 12g i use 700x powder on all of them and it gets .15 inch groups with the 30-06 at 100 yards decent for a 30-06.

Does reloading a magazine count?

In all seriousness reloading is something I have contemplated many times over the past few years, just dont know if it would be worth the time. I guess Ill never know until I try.

Its actually addicting making your own loads, watching ur groups get tighter

This is pretty much the same question that has kept me from reloading. If I can save 25% but it takes me hours to do it would I be better off just putting in a few more hours at work and buy the ammo already loaded. Plus you figure in the initial cost of the equipment how long does it take to break even and actually start to see a savings. I realize that I am not taking into account the ability to "fine tune" a particular load or the "something to do in the winter months" part of the equation, but the ammo I shoot a bunch of is standard calibers like 9mm, 45acp, and .223 so factory accuracy is generally acceptable for what I am doing.
I guess the biggest factor for me that would convince me to start reloading would be the ability to produce my own in the event that it became unavailable. Of course I am pretty well stocked so I would have to do alot of shooting before I was out.
Perhaps some of the posts in this thread will sway me to see other advantages that I have overlooked. Perhaps those of you that reload will be able to answer some of my questions on the subject. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't reload, in the past every time I ran across a great deal on ammo, I would buy several cases.
Now it seems every time I start moving things in the garage or in the rooms of my house I don't use I find cases of ammo in the corners.
I just found 5 cases of Match .308 that I had originally paid $200 a case..time to start shooting it up.
Just waiting on that Knights Armament SR 25 :)

That's my feeling as well.

But, I just got a 7.62/.308 and they are a little more expensive, so I might start looking into a reloader after the new year, if the Mayans are not right :-)

Maybe if the Mayans wers set up with reloaders they would still be around. Maybe their local store stopped selling ammo and they were wiped out due to an ammo shortage.

I've been reloading for 30 years, you can save a lot of money if you shoot alot. We shot competitions for years every weekend 2 day events 500 rounds a day. It adds up fast.

I use 2 dillon 550s, one for large primers one for small, 3 mec's 2 12 gauge one 20, and a rcbs rock chucker for small trial runs.

I load 38 s&w,38 special,357, 44/40, 44 special, 44 mag, 45acp, 45 schofield, 45lc, 45/70 and 5.56 and have dies for many others. Ok dies for every differnt caliber I own just in case. I use a lot of different powders from green dot and blue dot to black powder and many others. Mostly I buy 8lb kegs. I also cast alot of my own bullets. Time consuming but well worth it in terms of fun and accuracy and a money saver too.

If you have any questions I'd be glad to give a more in-depth answer to anything.

My first real gun (other than a 22) was a 657 when I was 16, so I started reloading early since the cheapest 41 mag I could find was a buck a round. Years and years on a RCBS Rockchucker. I love shooting my 1911 and AR-10, but hated reloading because .45 acp would be in bulk, and reloading hundreds of military 308 at a time was a giant PITA and was just like ka-chinh...ka-ching...ka-ching

Picked up a Dillon 550 a couple weeks ago, been blowing out .45 acp since then and starting to tinker with .41 mag. Haven't gotten around to .308 yet with a progressive, and I want to borrow a friend's Dillon Swager for the 5.56mm brass.

If you shoot a lot, you can save money. But, count on a solid $700 or more investment in good reloading equipment first. So there's a ton of costs, but most of the equipment will last a lifetime, or should anyway. Bigger the round is, more you save, generally. Plus, it's something to do and it's convenient to reload hundreds of rounds when you're bored.

I've been reloading for 30 years..45 schofield

Damn man, keeping the 45 Schofield alive

I only reload for 4 calibers right now, .41 mag, .45 acp, 5.56mm, and 308. I have a lot of 9mm brass, but no 9mm yet (well....one that could be shot a lot), and over 1200 38spl casings that I've just accumulated, but never bothered cleaning them or reloading.

I'm just a plinker, but like power, so sometimes I go for stout loads but most of the time it's just for accuracy. I like being able to shoot a handgun at 70+ yards open sights and hitting my targets :D

.45 acp- 5.7-5.9 grains of Unique with an overall of 1.25" using a 230 grain Powerbond bullet, WLP

.41 mag- 8.7-9.1 grains of Unique, using a 215 lead SWC (often weighing 220gr though), WLP

.308- 44.7 grains of Win 748 for just making noise and going boom using anything from 147gr to 168 gr FMJs, usually pulled military bullets I pick up when at Knob Creek. Going for accuracy, 168 grain Sierra Match King using 48.5 grains of CFE 223

5.56- Not sure yet, but with CFE 223 being good in the 308, I'm hoping to develop something with it.

Dies are as follows:

.41- RCBS carbide

.45 acp- Lee

.308- Hornady (which was the WORST die I have ever used, had to polish the hell out of the inside just to get the die usable, should have sent it back to Hornady for such a turd)

5.56- Redding

Press: Dillon 550, which is SO much easier to use than a Rockchucker :D

I've been loading .45ACP the longest, I use Winchester 231 powder and 185gr lead SWC

I would love to get into reloading. I only have an AR at the moment (5.56), but plan on getting a .45ACP down the road. I figure reloading would be my best option with how things seem to flow in my life these days and the initial chunk investment will sting, but only for a moment. I hope to get into reloading soon so that I don't have to depend on buying my ammo from stores or online and deal with the backorders and price hikes.

Sig 516 and a glock 21 Easy to find ammo for both. I don't know what you would expect to be happening in this end of the world scenario.. Zombies? 5.62 will punch through a skull no problems. I can't think of any other situation that doesn't involve us all being killed in which we would need a gun.
I think for the most part Humans will stick together when S&*# hits the fan, hopefully there wouldn't be a need for too many guns. The thought of millions of untrained trigger happies running around with assault rifles scares me more than any zombie could.

Ya don't have to reload a Busse AK47. Reload that!!
I need to get one though.
:D

Bwahahahaha...don't have much real world experience, do you?

And the thought of an Australian who can't take a joke and couldn't tell I'm being a smart ass.

Besides, if something did happen, you're thousands of miles away, us untrained trigger happies (who often happen to be better shots that 97% of law enforcement) would have no impact in Australia and you'd have your own problems to worry about.

That being said, I take it you don't reload?

considering the only calibers I shoot are 5.56, 7.62x51 and 7.62x39 in rifles, 9mm 45 in pistol, and bulk military surplus and wolfe being so cheap... well at one time it was.. I've never felt the need to reload.. if I want accurate 308, the Federal 175grain at about a buck a round is not too bad.. I do have one rifle in 300 Win mag I could see reloading for, but why buy a reloader for one round? oh well, if the president gets his way; reloading may be the only option... then it will be a dillon because I get their Blue Press catalog that has pretty girls on the cover :)
