This may sound silly but it may be a fun mental exercise...
This past week a friend had me read his copy of the Zombie Survival Guide. We then spent the weekend watching Mad Max I&II and tied it off with "The Book of Eli". We found that we were more fascinated by the steps the characters took to survive rather than the plot of the movies themselves.
We got to thinking about what would be on our packing list if the end of the world came. If you had only yourself to rely on and had to stay mobile. Long stretches of wilderness survival would be interspersed with reaching pockets of (un)civilization.
Apologies if this has been done before but what would you bring?
We just got back from the movie so as I write this list I know I'm gonna miss alot of things but here's what comes to mind:
1. A Calm Mind with Common Sense and Some Training (nothing that follows is worth a darn without it)
2. Stuff that holds Stuff
- A Quality Backpack (many pockets for separating gear, mesh outer pockets for easy accessible items, and a raincover)
- Sleeping Bag
- Sleep Mat
- 2 Stuff Sacks
- Tarp
- 550 Paracord
- Roll of Duct Tape
3. Clothing (pref. synthetic):
- two base layer tops
- trousers
- 2 underpants
- fleece/warmth layer with a hood
- gore-tex shell
- 2 pair wool socks
- quality hiking boots
- Buff headwear or scarf
- gloves
- hat
- sunglasses
- watch
4. Tools
- Folding Knife
- Fixed Blade Knife
- Machete or Hatchet
- Folding Saw
- MultiTool like a Leatherman Wave
- Butane Lighter
- Firesteel
- Small baggy of flammable material (tinder, vasaline soaked cottonballs, etc)
- Whistle
- Mirror (polished steel not glass)
- Compass
- Maps
- Headlamp
- Batteries
- Water Receptacle (either a stainless Klean Kanteen or a Nalgene nestled inside a GSI cup - to be able to boil water)
- Handgun ( a revolver since you don't worry about weakened springs/parts or I would even trust a Glock since it's made to be abused - common caliber like .38 or 9mm - Needs to be a commonly made model for ease of finding parts)
- Rifle with scope (mostly for hunting - also a common caliber)
- Ammunition
5. Hygiene
- toothbrush, floss, and paste
- First Aid Kit (bandages, antiseptic ointment, painkillers, alcohol swabs, quick clot)
- water purification tablets (these'll run out but just including them anyway)
6. Entertainment
(This is a subject we went back and forth about but the human need for mental stimulation is important - you just gotta make sure not to go overboard)
- Pack of Playing Cards
- One Dense Book (e.g. Bible, War & Peace, etc.)
- iPod (Yes, I know this is excessive and I deserve to be scolded for including it. But I just can't imagine going without music - Johnny Cash and Al Green make life worth living)
- Journal and pen
7. Transportation
- Mountain Bike (great for moving large distances on uneven terrain, lightweight, no need for gas)
That's all I have off the top of my head.
I know I missed a lot of stuff.
Just wondering would ya'll would bring.
Have Fun.
Best,
Brass
