Ok, I don't know where I heard this but is it illegal to harvest ironwood in the U.S.? Also has anyone here used mulberry wood as handle material? I've been told that it looks like birdseye maple.

The reason I ask is because my Father has access to both and I was going to have him send me some. Thanks!

Mulberry looks a little like osage orange to me. But it is not as hard. It has a nice check pattern but I don't think it looks like maple. It oxidises to a nut brown like osage if left untreated.

:)

The law is pretty clear regarding ironwood. It's simple - you have to share. If he sends you some he has to send everybody some :)

In Arizona, it is illegal to harvest Olneya Tesota (Ironwood), on anything but private property.
If you find a blow down, or washed out tree in the desert and grab it, you better be able to prove it was down, if stopped and questioned.

I have a 4 3/4" left hand, drop point hunter that a customer backed out on, it has a Mulberry burl handle on it. The stuff is really quite hard and beautiful. A nice shade of green.
This is the only knife that I have used this wood on, although I have a couple more blocks.

OK, That's what it was. Yeah he lives in Arizona but I think it's growing all over his land down there. (Arivipa) So I think I'll have to give him a call. Thanks!
