My endura 4 has some lateral blade play when the knife is open. Is there any way to eliminate this/restore it to its originally fixed and secured state?
Thanks

If it is new little blade play in a back lock can be normal and Spyderco have tested their knives and found that back locks with little blade play can be better then lock backs with no blade play. So do not sweat it and use it.

If it is a user you might try and tightening the screw holding the lock bar. It is the one nearest to the pivot. They can loosen with time.

Other then that it is normal wear and tear. The tolerance on these knives are high but they are not as high as higher expensive knives like Wiliam Henry, Chris Reeve etc.

Perfect response. Well done.

Doesn't work on the SS handle version. I think he just has to live with it unless he taps the pivot with a hammer.

It is the SS handle and the play is from use

THG i want to make sure I understand your suggestion correctly, do you recommend tapping the area outside of the pivot when the knife if closed to bring each side of the handle closer together? Will the SS bend slightly or will it be brittle? Should the knife be heated first?

And thanks to everyone for your suggestions, ya'll make this website a wonderful community

To be honest, you should probably ask someone else, as I have not dealt with this problem on a SS handle knife. Yablanowitz has told me that he has fixed SS handled knives before, so you might like to ask him.

I would not worry about surface damage as much as I would worry about taking one to many hit on the pivot and having the knife hard to open. It easy to do and AFAIK it can't be undone.

The pin is peened on both sides to flare the pin and hold everything in place. If some slack has developed it is probably on the order of a few thousandths of an inch. You can lightly peen the pin which should push the handle slabs together as the pin is flared a little more. You could tap the handle scale and force it together, but without peening the pin it will just slide back out on the pin.

If you do it you want to use a flat face hammer and take light taps checking how the blade opens every time. If the blade does get too tight you can grab it close to the pivot where it is strong and put horizontal pressure on the blade which wants to spread the scales apart. You can also put a flat head screw driver in between the scales and twist to force apart but there is a chance you will ding the SS this way.

This is in no way an exact science and you are putting your knife at some risk. If the play is not much and the blade does not seem loose I would probably just live with it as it has been shown to not be a problem unless really bad.

I put mine in a really heavy catalog like a cabelas catalog and hit down ontop of it with a hammer. Worked perfect. I did that with my buck 110 also. Just give it a good hit, check how the blade play is and go from there.
