Endura 4 blade play ??

I have an Endura 4 FFG in zdp-189. I love this knife and blade steel. I was fooling with it and noticed it has a bit of play in the lock, both fore and aft and side to side. I'm not overly concerned with it, just wondering if it is something inherent in this type of lock or with the frn scales. This is my only Spyderco with either.
Common or not?? Thanks in advance.

Most lockbacks have a little amount of play, its just the way it works. The Spyderco lockbacks usually dont have much play at all. So movement up and down is quite normal. Side to side play can be adjusted by tightening the pivot screw. Its just a question of finding the sweet spot, for ease of opening and minimal play.

Hope this helps some....

I've never encountered a decent lock back that has any vertical play. That means there is a problem with the lock not meeting the bottom of the tang of the blade. None of the Spyderco's with lock backs have ever had this problem.

i have the same knife and it has the same up and down play. but i really have to work hard to make it noticeable. so i let it slide.

A slight amount of vertical play, generally only noticed when pressure is applied to the blade while cutting, is common enough on Spyderco midlocks to be considered normal as is some horizontal play when the blade is closed. However, there should be no horizontal play when the blade is locked open.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try adjusting and tightening screws and see what happens. Like I said, it's not a big deal to me. Was just curious if it was common.

Sal has said a small amount of vertical blade play is normal and common. I wouldn't worry about it much.

If adjusting the pivot doesn't fix it also try tightening some of the handle screws. That may fix the issue for you. My flat ground Endura 4 has no play in any direction.
