Hey guys I'm going on a kayak/camping trip soon and I want to bring a knife and it will either be a endura 4 ffg or buy a h1 steel knife. I wanted to know if endura will rust if I get it wet in salt water.
Will sand get in the pivot point, and if sand gets in is it ok to leave it for an hour till I wash it?
If not what should I buy instead?

Blade forums answer: take the excuse and buy one of the salt series. :D
My answer: I think it will be fine, just make sure to give it a thorough rinse followed by drying it off as best as possible. The sand will cause some exces wear but nothing major as long as you take the time to work the action under running water (which should get 90 percent of the sand out) -kirbs

I've worn my VG10 Endura in a salt water swimming pool, which has about 1/10 the amount of salt, and I noticed a few discoloration marks from rust after a day or two. H1 steel won't rust at all, in comparison.

Took a Delica on a day trip snorkeling in Maui. One or two small spots that were easy to polish off. If the trip is a one time deal put some CLP on it and use the Endura. If you're going to be kayaking very often get a Salt. Just my 2 cents.

you'll be fine, as long as you don't forget about it by the end of the day. hell, you'll be fine even if you do forget about it for a few days, it might look bad at first glance but a minute will be enough to fix it up.

the rust issue is massively over blown on the forums. cleaning up a little rusty generally takes way less time than sharpening.

I used an Endura with VG-10 commercial fishing in the north atlantic and as a professional mariner on the inland rivers and never cleaned or otherwise maintained it much except for sharpening. it was exposed to salt water, herring brine, mud and sand as a commercial lobsterman and coal dust, sand, rain, snow, salt and gasoline as a deckhand on river towboats. I never had a problem with rust except for surface staining.

Thanks for all the advice :D ill probably use it.
But anyway what would you recommend for kayak/sailing knife?

I'd just play it safe and go with an H1 blade. Guess you need to buy another knife. Bummer!:D

I use an Endura in saltwater all the time and haven't had any problems with rust - At the end of the day, I just rinse it, blow it out real quick with compressor, (canned air would probably work too) and put a couple drops of oil on the pivot.

the endura would make a fine kayak or sailing knife. Or you can get any of Spyderco's sheepsfoot or hawkbill knives. The Harpy I have been told is the preferred knife of Lake Michigan sailors. I personally don't like fixed blades when I am on a boat, there are too many things on a work boat to catch on. I would think the same would apply to a sailboat with running and standing rigging, rails, lifeline etc to pull the knife out of its sheath.

I like sheepsfoot or hawkbill knives because the straight and/or concave edges hold the rope along the edge better than a blade with a belly.

As far as I'm concerned the Endura would be more than fine. Rinse it off with fresh water. But if you are looking for an excuse to buy another knife, you got one.

Ditto above. Just don't let it stay wet all the time or leave it in your PFD overnight. If I were to buy a knife for this purpose I'd get a Boye folder. I have a Boye Basic 3 and it is fantastic!

I'm kayaking to an island called shackleford to camp (there are wild horses:D). I won't have acces to fresh water for 4 days.
In that case what would say?

Thanks for all the advice!

You might have to polish it a bit when you get home, but that's about it. 4 days around salt water won't desintegrate the knife.

If you're looking for a knife specifically for this use, I'd get a fixed blade in H1. No moving parts to get filled with sand and no rust issues at all. Something like the H1 Enuff or one of G-Sakai's H1 knives like the Sabi 1.

While no experience with the H1 steel, Spyderco's VG10 holds up pretty well to moisture all things considered. I've had mine on canoe trips where I was submerged and the knife was with me. Slight discoloration on the blade after a full day in a wet pocket, but nothing I'm worried about by any means.

Vikings used to cross oceans on small ships loaded down with crude, carbon steel weapons and armor then proceed to fight battles with them. your knife will be fine man.

it's as easy as wiping it off on your shirt when you get a spare second. and at the end of the day if you have some fresh water to spare rinse the pivot then dry it. if you can't rinse the pivot though the knife will still be fine.... might get a bit spotty. nothing that you can't fix with a fine ceramic sharpener or anything else mildly abrasive when you get home
