Hi:

I have a really dull edge Endura 4 zdp189, what do you recommend, 30 or 40 angle on the sharpmaker? I've never sharped this knife from factory.

Thanks, Diego.

I don't have the patience to reprofile zdp using a sharpmaker, so I'd suggest sticking with the factory angle. The steel will handle more acute angles, but creating them can be a lot of work. Once you get the knife sharp you can save yourself some trouble by keeping it that way. Letting it get dull makes the eventual sharpening much more tedious.

30* primary, with 0.25-0.5mm 40* micro bevel highly polish. With this geometry, it's super sharp & tough without being chippy for most slicings & cuttings + light choppings.

+1.

You might consider just sending it to Spyderco. For $5 they'll get it back to snuff. Pretty good deal if you can bear to part it it … then just touch it up regularly.

Send it to RicahrdJ for a rebevel at 30°. When you get it back, just regularly touch it up on the SM on the 40° setting. You can also have RuchardJ get it lower than 30° so you can touch up on the 30° setting on the SM. The second option would be my preference since ZDP can handle the low angles.

Is it full flat grind or saber grind? If it is saber: why to bother, it is rather built for strength than for slicing anyway. If it is flat grind: it may make sense to push it a bit further.

I have a small problem, in sending to Spyderco, I live in Argentina, so I'll have to do it myself.

Thanks.

I don't think I've quite seen failed logic quite like this before. Can you please explain to me why you wouldn't bother to have a sharp knife if it was a saber grind?

Knives are meant to cut, and they do that task MUCH better sharp. That's like saying you don't care if your car has wheels because you don't need to drive anywhere today.

if you do it right, the first sharpening on a zdp endura will be the only sharpening you'll ever have to do. a touch up and stropping every 4 weeks will make it split hair.

and think of personal development. if you can profile a zdp, you can do any blade steel. cmon hop to it!
