since the backspacer is removable on the spydie endura are there metal replacements. so that it would have a run of steel from the tip to the end of the handle?

I haven't seen one yet, maybe you can make one. BTW, the backspacer holds the spring for locking bar, if you don't know it yet.

yeah i knew that it is an integral part of the knife so that is why i am looking to buy one and not make one

You may get lucky and be able to have one made by a knifemaker here... However you may have to get an all new lockbar made too and that calls for precision work.
In my opinion, the liners provide an existing run of steel from blade to butt, that should be good enough. I would not mess with the close tolerances, but if you must, have a pro do it.

i'm more interested in it being aesthetic over adding strength

You may be able to request a thin layer of Ti be added after the backspacer is shaved down around the edges a bit (1mm around the outer perimiter). That would look cool, I doubt that would interfere with safety.
Not sure but STR (a knifemaker and mod here) does some really cool things with Ti. :)

I am interested in this too. Having taken apart a few Enduras I can confirm that the back spacer will be a fairly involved task for a machinist. The key ways in the liner for the spring stop are going to push the cost up a bit. I would expect the spacer to cost more than the knife, but I know all about investing WAY more than the value of a knife to make it more to my liking.

Please post images once done, and if you do not mind, it would prove interesting to hear some of the quotes you get.

I love the Enduras, all generations, and I've tinkered with several ideas.

I started making an E4 backspacer out of aluminum, as a test piece, and it all went really well until I realized that, on the standard FRN backspacer, there are two little nibs for alignment in the steel liners. Oops. I set the project aside until I can devote a little more time to it - basically, the section where the nibs would be, will be drilled out & I'll insert a small steel rod to serve that purpose. The slot flexes too much from spring tension if the nibs aren't there, and the lock feels kind of 'squishy'. (I filed them off an old backspacer on an E4 that had been taken apart a few times, and they were buggered up. I had to drill & put the rod - a trimmed nail - in there. It works, but it's quite a chore getting everything lined up just right.)

It was one of those projects that became MUCH more involved than I intended. As usual. ;)

thx - cpr
