Endura/Delica Heavy Duty?

I would say that the Endura/Delica line is the most popular (best selling) line of tactical (one hand opening and pocket clip) folders ever and I Love their design, but I have never really trusted a plastic handled knife for the hard use I put them through in my work as a construction supervisor. I have always wanted a G-10 handled version, maybe even with SS liners :) . Anybody else think this would be a good idea or would buy one?

P.S. I know the SS handled versions sorta address this but I would still love em as described above?

P.P.S. I think they should be called the Endura HD and Delica HD, what do you think?

Well I think I asked for the same thing a while back.
Spyderco feels that the Endura is tough enough as is. They want to keep them light slim and tough,as opposed to a little tougher but heavier, thicker etc.

I would tend to agree,I just like big beefy knives. :)

FWIW I think the SS ones will soon have vg-10 blades.

I also know they are used hard not only in construction trades, but by police, fire, military,my guess is they hold up or they would have been built more HD.

But yes I would buy one. ;)

You might just be surprised what those plastic handled knives will endure.

You should give them a try. FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) is a long way from "plastic" One former Spyderco employee stated that the FRN handles can give the same strength as SS - IIRC he said that it's more often the pivot that shears than the handle fails.

I’ll second what 4 s ter said. Referring to them as “plastic handles”, is indicative of misconception, which probably contributes to your viewing them as inadequate. I was once of the same impression. You should check out DAYWALKER’s review of the Endura FRN on the Spyderco website. He used the handle to beat on wood, and it left dents in the wood. That isn't exactly what I consider "light duty".

Like the others say, FRN is actually a good material.

Not long after I got a Native III with its nice hefty, rounded, grabable handle I was wishing Spyderco had some more knives with that kind of handle. A 3D version of the Endura would make a great heavy duty knife. I like G10, Micarta, and steel handles, but for a knife that will see serious use I wouldn't want a handle that is too flat or sharply beveled.

I conducted a few "tests" and posted the results on the "Reviews" section of Bladeforums.

But the FRN Rescue survived the tests but the micarta Calypso Jr and the SS Endura did not.

Maybe it was just dumb luck, but I don't think so.

Good luck,
Allen.

though i dont FRN myself, just looks cheap to me, it is plenty strong. i wouldnt worry about it breaking.

get an endura 11 SS if ya want diff handles.

Spyderco used to sell a G10 Standard (very similar to a Delica) that was finally discontinued. Fish around and you may be able to find one on Ebay or potentially NOS from a dealer.

I think the FRN handles can absorb more punishment than the average knife user can dish out. If your using the knife as a knife then it will not break. If you use it as a crowbar then something will give.

Chances are, it will be the blade or pivot, before the FRN gives out.
