got my endura today, was very unhappy at first. but it is my first, so maybe i'm being too being picky, let me know. Sal especially, please chime in:

1) blade was not vg-10. bought it from spoon river and the site said it was vg-10, but it's not. talked to walter at spoon river, and he appologized, and told me that he knew he had it wrong on the site. but then he told me that the SS model of both the endura and the delica only come in aus-6, not in vg-10. both the frn handled knives (endura and delica) come in vg-10, but not the SS models

2) the blade is extremely hard to open. can barely open it with 2 hands, much less one handed. and i have been working it too. how long does it take to lossen the guys up?

please help. i have already arranged to return for my money back if these problems remain an issue.

thanks,

Okay, to question 1: Yes, SS Enduras (at least to my knowledge) only come with AUS-6 blade, which is still okay. I have one, and love it. Certainly it's not as new as CPMS30V or VG-10, but it's a great steel and a solid knife. But that just sounds like an issue with the seller who mislabeled the knife's blade steel, not a knife problem. :)

Q2: Yes, I also found that most SS models are hard to open at first. My first SS Spydie was a Harpy, and I could barely open it, so I created a thread similar to this one. The advice I got was to clean it, and keep opening and closing it until it loosens up. It will with time. Took me many hours of watching TV and opening and closing it to get the action to get silky smooth. Another piece of advice I got was to put some toothpaste into the pivot area, so that the opening and closing is more abrasive. I tried it, but didn't like it too much, and it was hard to clean the knife completely. But really it's not too big an issue after a while. Well-worn SS knives open and close like a dream, and are much more solid (you just feel the heft of it) than G-10 Police, or FRN models.

Soooo, I guess what I am trying to say is that unless you really want a VG-10 knife, there's nothing to worry about... :) But if superior blade steel is an issue, then return is the only option.

vess,

you're right the blade steel is not the biggest issue. but i have heard that vg-10 is close to perfect, so that i why i was let down about that. but it's not the knife's fault :)

thanks for the tips on loosening it up. maybe i will sit around tomorrow and work with it, see what happens.

thanks again,

jcrim007,put a good oil into the action prior to cycling it.I use Balistol,Militec or sewing machine oil on mine and they smooth out nicely.tom.;)

Militec should loosen a knife up pretty quickly.
As to the blade steel, I'm sure Spyderco did heat treat AUS 6 well. They aren't really that bad.
I have a Native SS, and it's a good piece with AUS 10

I really like the Aus steels. The blade should not be that hard to open though. If after oiling and working about 100 times and it doesn't get any better I would exchange it for another one.

I second that. Mine was a little tight but still very smooth out of the box. Of course I have a nervous tick of opening my knife and closing it again over and over when I'm bored, so I loosened mine up quick.

If you want to stay with the all-stainless construction and have a VG-10 blade, you could always trade up to the Police model. The Police is only slightly larger and feels great in the hand (ok, it feels great in MY hand). I'm not sure of the price difference though.

Hi Jcrim. Our Stainless models are "Bare bones" tough. The handles are heat treated 420 to hold the pins better. We make them tight when new so when they break in, they're not too loose. There are thousands of our stainless models 15 or 20 years old that are still going to work every day.

Also, keep in mind that a lock back has more spring tension on the close than most locks.

MY Endura SS was very stiff when I first got it as was my Police model. The Endura opens beautifully now after a little TLC. Its a great knife give it some time. My Police model is still very stiff by the way, but that is because it almost never gets carried/used.

jcrim007,

the Endura SS will also be my first Spydie (got off work early today, raced to the mailbox... NOTHING. wahh!!). i posted queries similar to yours in the Spyderco forum. Sal answered quickly and honestly, and put my fears to rest. just give 'er a little time, and i'm sure the action will get better. maybe the two of us can start a New Spydie Familiarity Support Group! :D heheh... good luck to ya!
