I would like to hear peoples opinions on this. Im talking about the endura 4 full flat grind vs an endura saber grind, thats been re-profiled to a scandi grind. Which would you prefer? Which would be sharper/ cut better? Any thoughts on edge holding ability? I might have to buy a few more enduras and do some testing...

I have taken an Endura 4 down to scandi. It ended up right around 20° included angle. It works okay for wood carving, but the FFG does as well or better. VG-10 does not fare well in my normal use at that low angle, and I find the Endura platform too large for my taste for whittling, so that scandi Endura sees little use. While the 20° edge makes it theoretically sharper, the drag from having the edge bevel go to the full thickness of the blade negates that advantage for most things other than shaving hair off your arm or taking thin shavings off wood.

I back the Scandi. Easier than hell to maintain and sharpen, and gets a truly wicked edge.

Hmmm. A scandi endura is intriguing, but I would have some doubts in vg10's stability in a scandi grind. I know my super thin edged centofante gets a bit fragile....

i was too scared about the scandi thing so i prefered convexing the whole grind, it's probably way sturdier that way and it also cuts way better than stock.

but keep in mind that it was a lot of work freehand ( thinned on stones, multiple bevels, than blended together and thinned again with sandpaper on leather, very shallow convex) and it doesn't turn it into a scalpel, there's still some wedging because the blade still gets to full thickness fast. still a big improvement.

I tried to convex my ffg Endura. Took 3 hours with sandpaper and the result was surprisingly fine. Just looked at some youtube clips and went to work.
