Greetings of the season all! Well what a surprise I received for the holidays! I got one of those Enduras with the grids filled in with red enamel and the Spydie logo in white! Appropriate colors for this time of year! I recall a past thread on this particular model. How rare, if at all, is this piece and how many were made? And in what year? Mine is serrated but did they come in plain as well? Any history would prove interesting. Thanks.

Do you know where they have these or other similarly decorated Spyderco's for sale? Do you know what other models are available like this? By the way, how durable is that coloring?

Bernie

For anyone interested in these: I've seen literally dozens on the eBay auction site. They're the pre-98 style with plastic clips. Pre-98 Rescues are available also.

Seasons greetings to you Nakano.

The piece you speak of must be aftermarket. We've never done anything like that at Spyderco. Sounds like handwork to me. Sounds intersting. Was this done on a black FRN handle?

I purchased a few from my distributor (Blue ridge Knives). I e mailed a guy on e bay and asked questions about these and was told that they came from Spyderco. I wrote Danelle and she had no knowledge of these and later she e mailed me and told me that they were a limited run.
Whats up?

Bobby

I saw one of these at the last Cincinnati NKCA show, It looked like it was done with model paint. I thought that some kid had done it and was now trying to sell it...? Someone must have done these, or that was some busy kid!

Thank you Sal. They are done on a FRN handle and comes with the older tapered integral pocket clip. No doubt they are genuine Spydercos. I believe Bobby is correct in that CS stated that they were limited runs. Perhaps we can dig up that 4 sale thread as it included a beautiful pic.

FYI folks, the filled in red lines and the Spydie logo in white are super clean and even. Looks more professional than from a busy kid.

Ok, what gives Sal? Inquiring minds want to know.

I too have received several Endura's and Rescue's from BRK. These are definitely factory finished knives, and are done with enamel. They are pre-98 plastic clip models, fully serrated.

They both are Black handled with Red checkering which is only on the front side (non-clip), and the Spyder circle is filled in with White, while the lettering and the actual Spyder is Black.

I also remember the thread and recall someone (possibly Dannelle), stating that they were a limited run of 500 each.

The knives you guys are talking about were made up by Blue Ridge Knives. They were sitting on a good amount of the older style Enduras and Rescues (maybe Delicas too?) when the new 98 styles came out. They wanted to do something different to try and move their stock more easily. I'm not sure how many they had made up, I believe about 1000, you'd have to ask them.
I hope this helps.
Rafael

If this is true, then me and the folks at BRK have to have "a little talk".

Sal,
If these are not factory run knives, you might want to check into it for future projects because it really looks nice. I am just a bit ticked off that BRK would represent them as factory knives.

Rafael, are you sure that BRK made or modified these Spydercos? I'll be seeing Phil (the Owner)tomorrow ... I'll ask him about it.

No... I didn't sell it to Nakano2 either!

Until then, here's a pic of the knife in question:

That certainly looks like a factory knife, but I've not seen the coloring before. Not likely that such a project should occur here without my knowledge? Spyderco is not a very big company.

Yep , that' s the same one as mine. As mentioned, a very clean and even job. I can also verify that it came from Blue Ridge. Perhaps it is appropriate to have a new thread in the Manufacturers forum ran parallel to this one.

I spoke with a rep at BRK who said she did not know if the Red Handles were done by them or not, but that it was possible because they sometimes do custom runs. She would have to ask the owner (Mr.Martin) but he was not in today.

In any case they look really cool!!

Whew, Sorry it took so long for me to get back to this thread. My phone lines have been down for a day or so.( And still are ) So I ran over to a friends house to use his computer.

I checked with BRK also, Phil wasn't in. One of his salespersons did tell me that it was an aftermarket job. But... they didn't do the work. Blue Ridge is simply a warehouse, and doesn't do any custom work like that. ( He wasn't sure who did the aftermarket work )

Anyway... I like it! It's professionally done... and very appealing. Adds a bit a "flavor" to the standard ol' black.

More to come... when I get a chance to talk with Phil after the Holidays!
