Endura vertical play

This may not be anything to new but I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who is experiencing vertical play in their endura. When I just bought mine it was solid as rock, no play in any direction. Well naturally I carried my endura everywhere and it started to develop the dreaded vertical play after hardly any real use. I HATE blade play, so much so that I stopped carrying my beloved orange endura for a while. Saw a thread on cleaning it out as a possible cure and gave it a shot. Took the whole knife apart and saw that I had some serious lent jammed in there, cleaned it up and put it back together and was pleasantly surprised. The play was almost completely eliminated besides a faint little click of the lock bar if I really wrench on it. Now its back in the rotation baby! So if you are experiencing the same issue (which seems to be pretty common with these among other lockbacks) give it a try.

Did you notice the little pocket designed in there to give room for a bit of lint to keep it operating and locking up safe? It is going to give a tiny bit of play and often a clicking noise as you described when pushed on fairly hard. Some folks go crazy about it even though it is there for a reason and for their safety. They often think any slight movement at all is wrong. I have a really old and wrung out police that moves a bit but still locks up safely which is amazing after what that old knife hasbeen through.

If you keep the grit out of these Spyderco lockbacks they get smoother and smoother as they age polishing up rather than one side wearing a groove in the other. My 1992 first generation Endura is like glass it's so smooth. It's why I only use lubes dry that won't hold grit which can score and scratch the steel. Even a tiny sand sized rock is enough. Keep them clean, don't pry, twist or baton this design and it will go on longer than most of us who own them.

That is very interesting, thanks for sharing. I didn't notice any pocket but then again I wasn't looking, just popping everything off and cleaning it. Now I may take it back apart just to check it out. I am pretty anal about blade play, though most if not all of my lockbacks have a tiny bit. As long as doesn't go past the little "clicky" movement its alright, but I cant stand when I get up and down wobble. It is very smooth (like all spydercos) and even though has a little up and down with the lockbar, I trust the lockup completely.

Here's a Delica with the small pocket (hope I guess it right):

I only have an Endura, but found how lockbacks is so much satisfying in the way it feels when operated, compared to liner locks. Perhaps it reminds me of my younger days first locking blades (Buck 110 replica), perhaps because it's truly ambidex.
I guess there's a reason the Endura & Delica are classics. It's a pity I didn't make it to the Delica contest. Winning a Delica would make my day :).
