spent the weekend at port aransas --texas coast. used my endura for kitchen & also on the jetty to cut lines & cut up bait . now in my kitchen & on my brothers ranch all i do is wash the blade & dry same. my vg10s may see oil 3 times a year. i also use these knives to cut glue from carpets & slice errant carpet strands , exposing the edge to active chemicals. all i do is wash & dry the blade before stropping & in months very little discoloration. 5 hours exposure to salt h2o & the blade was getting light rust specs. nothing to be concerned about as i washed it off back at the condo.my amazement was the rapidity in which a blade that had cut onions & lemons & been wiped off with no rust was already spotting.i guess i had forgotten how crazy salt h2o was on metal.probably some of this problem could be arrested by using a tuff- glide cloth but i certainly did'nt fore see the sudden oxyidation of this exposure. anyway all i'm communicating is regulars to salt h2o activities would best be served by the salt series alloys unless they desire a busy maintenance schedule.

How was the fishing?

Ocean water right at the beach tends to have a higher Oxygen content because of the breakers. This increases the rate of corrosion on steels exposed to it compared to steels exposed to water out at sea.

I put on a light coat of olive oil on my ZDP Endura when I spend a day at the beach. I use it all day(more like 6-8 hours) prepping and cutting food. Often, I get to wash with soap and water only when I get home. No issues at all.

Same here. I've taken VG10 Delicas to the Atlantic and into the Atlantic before with no issues. I did coat the blade and liners with Militec before leaving home and then rinsed it every night in fresh water and dried it, but I had no issues at all. Same with a 440C BM mini-Grip. No problems with either knife after a week at the beach.

Agreed. A few specks are no big deal.

I guess. But washing the blade to get rid of a few light rust specks hardly seems like "a busy maintenance schedule."

I've said it before, when it comes to rust resistance, ALL Spydercos perform well.

I'm sure the H1 steel used in Spyderco's Salt series is the bees knees, but some years back when I still lived in southeast Florida, I carried a "lowly" ATS-55 Endura 3 all over the place. I'd carry it clipped to my shorts when wading in swamps fishing for bass, out on a boat deep sea fishing, and even carried it to the beach where I'd cut up pineapple and other fruit. As for maintenance, I might occasionally run the knife under the tap and rinse it out with fresh water. Rust? Once in awhile I got a few tiny specks and spots, but nothing I couldn't literally scrape off with my thumbnail.

thanks guys for all the tips, the rust spots did'nt bother me but my amazement was the rapidity in which it occured. all my ranch knives & hunters are carbon steel with gec 1095 a favorite so patinas are a way of life. anyway i will keep giving the enduras a steady salt diet.
